Patience: Discover how good things take time in this antidote to an instant world

‘The concept of time is hard to grasp. From a single minute to a full century, hearts beat, trees bloom and grow - and a human lives a lifetime. The book takes 18 different periods of time - from a single minute; to an hour; to over a century - to show the process of life, looking at biology in all its forms, from plants, animals and human biology too.

In one minute, learn that your heart beats over 100 times. In one day, learn how a dragonfly unfurls a pair of wings. In a season, watch a bear hibernate for winter. In over 80 years, see a human live a lifetime.

Packed with real science but rooted in the deeper things in life, this poetic non-fiction anthology is sure to prompt questions between a parent and child.’

‘A stunning tour de force of a novel based on the true story of a fourteen-year-old boy's harrowing experience fleeing a Hi**er youth camp with his best friend in the last days of the Second World War--perfect for readers of All the Light We Cannot See and The German Girl.

At the start of the war, eight-year-old Max Bernot lives with his sister and parents in Lauterbach, Saarland, a narrow strip of territory between the French and German defence lines. His German father, Anton, and his French mother, Marguerite, do their best to shield Max and his sister, Anna, from N**i violence, but in late 1944, their beloved godfather is executed in their garden by the SS, and Max, now thirteen, is conscripted in the Volkssturm.

Less than a month later, Max flees a Hi**er Youth camp in Bavaria with his best friend, Hans. His mission: to return home and tell his mother the truth about his godfather's murder As he escapes, he sends postcards to his family that trace his fraught journey across a country in its death throes. Unbeknownst to Max, his mother is trapped in the German interior, coerced into working for a fanatical N**i officer.

Desperate to escape and reunite her family, Marguerite must first protect Anna from the sinister attentions of their captor, who could hold information on Max's whereabouts even as Allied planes circle closer.

Deftly interweaving the wartime stories of Max and Marguerite, The End and the Beginning maps the loss of innocence of a generation of children raised in the shadow of the Reich and follows the fate of one family, neither wholly French nor entirely German, who find themselves on the wrong side whichever way they turn.’

Maybe Mum loves reading crime? 🤔

‘Someone's been watching. Someone's been waiting.

From the #1 internationally bestselling author of What Happened to Nina? comes a gripping high-stakes novel of suspense about three seemingly unconnected people, caught in a lethal web of deceit and unhealed wounds.

Alexis Turner walks into the police station to report an assault. By the end of the day, she is nowhere to be found.Soon after she disappears, three identical packages arrive at three very different doors: a respected psychologist's home, a socialite's mansion, and a struggling single father's run-down apartment.

Inside, each gift is perfectly tailored to its recipient - and each will tear apart the life of its intended victim.

Detective Sergeant Judith Lee is smart and experienced, but this is no ordinary case. Someone with intimate knowledge of their targets is orchestrating these attacks. Someone who knows exactly how to hurt each victim where they're most vulnerable. And she's convinced that somehow, it connects back to Alexis Turner.

As she races to uncover the connection between three seemingly unrelated people, Judith discovers she's no longer just investigating the game - she's being forced to play.’

‘From the author of A Waiter In Paris...

In 1960s Paris, the high-life and the low-life go hand in hand. It is a time of glamour, sports cars, casinos and night clubs with a cast of actresses, petty criminals, high-level gangsters and compromised politicians. And with French cinema taking the world by storm, the man at the dark heart of it all is an enigmatic film star dubbed 'the most beautiful man in the world'.

With a shady past and a taste for bad company, Alain Delon lives on the edge. But when a dead body turns up in the outskirts of Paris that turns out to be his associate, Stevan, questions begin to be asked. That Delon shot to stardom playing the stylish and murderous Tom Ripley does not go unnoticed. Is art imitating life or is life imitating art? And who killed Stevan Markovic?

Edward Chisholm, author of the acclaimed A Waiter In Paris submerses the reader into the city's demimonde and draws us intimately into events as they unfold. And as we inhabit the lives of the players in this extraordinary true-life drama, we witness what became to be known as The Markovic Affair from the inside, as it spirals out of control and not only pulls down Alain Delon but everyone in his orbit.’

Maybe one for Mum?! 🇫🇷 🥂 🔪 🩸 💅

‘A powerful literary debut from an astonishing new Kiwi voice, focusing on the Indo-Fijian indenture system and how it affected generations across the Pacific.

Rajasthan 1888: Avani Rathod, a nomad of the Banjara community, is summoned to teach a blue-eyed colonial officer the trees of her region, but instead is misled into indenture to the sugarcane plantations of Fiji.

While on the voyage that leads her away from her ancestral land, Avani's baby forms in her belly and she forges close friendships with the other women bound for the Pacific - bonds that will be tested once they reach the islands, under the suffocating colonial powers.

Aotearoa 2016: Avani's great-granddaughter, Meera Chand, seeks the true history of her ancestors - the forgotten and displaced Girmitiya. Meera's search for her great-grandmother's origins leads her to a region of India, where she learns the rhythms of Odissi dance and where she meets up with her former lover - the man she can never have, but whom she can't forget.

Set in Aotearoa, Australia, India and Fiji, Banjara is an essential reimagining of Indo-Fijian Girmitiya history, and a love letter to our ancestors whose stories live on in our genes.’
