The Undercurrent presents The Bookshop Freakshow!

Gather now! The Undercurrent’s stage shall soon be occupied by the most wonderful freaks we could drag from the corners of our city to put on a show that will most certainly take you by surprise. From circus stunts to twisted theatre, this troupe packs something fresh, tasty and dripping with variety to their smallest stage yet.

The Undercurrent presents Klezmer Rebs!

The Klezmer Rebs return to The Undercurrent on Saturday nite 13 June after a stellar year. The Rebs bring their sometimes rollicking, sometimes delicate songs from the ‘old country’, hot off headlining at the Wellington Folk Festival and rousing sets at CubaDupa and Newtown Festival. They will be featuring their new live album Back to Futuna. Last year’s performance at the Undercurrent was hugely memorable so don’t miss the Rebs’ return to the little bookstore with a heart of gold.

The Undercurrent presents the Alex Trask Quintet!

Local saxophonist Alex Trask presents a set of original music for two horns and rhythm. Inspired by folk music from around the world and infused with jazz performance practice, these tunes have a simplicity in common. Free improvised sections contrast carefully arranged melodies, allowing creativity and structure to coexist. The fiddle-esque melodies and straightforward harmonies create an open and inviting sound that changes depending on the musicians on stage. Performing this music as a group invites each member to paint their private imaginings, creating a unique collective folklore.

This is the first of a two gig series where the band will be exploring some new compositions. On this gig the band will perform some previously unheard songs, come and catch the debut of this new set.
