After 33 years in business – and almost 18 years trading at 237 Cuba Street – it is with very mixed feelings that I have decided to close Minerva – and retire.
I would like to salute you, our brilliant Minerva customers, for making this shop the place it has become – a destination for lovers of good books and beautiful, quality, well-crafted and designed objects. Thank you all for shopping here – online, at shows, or in person. Thank you too, for your suggestions and for ordering books, magazines and product ranges that have become a central part of our inventory. Since 2008, we have expanded from a craft and textile base (with a gallery attached) to stocking a wide range of books, boutique imported magazines, cards, threads and calendars. I never envisaged becoming the go-to for cards and puzzles when opening this shop. However, Minerva had a life of its own and over the years, has become so much more than a community of textile and craft aficionados.
Thank you too, to all the Minerva staff over these years. Our fulltime staff were skilled stitchers and crafters who shared the passion and vision of this store. Wonderful, talented, enthusiastic textile design students and graduates from Massey helped keep the wheels turning year after year. Full and part time staff included Jenny, Lynsey, Charlotte, Isabella, Jane, Jill, Esther, Lillian, MaryAnn, Hannah, Eloise, Julia, Olivia, Mikey, Una, Sylvie, Georgia, Marilyn, Michele, Ruth and Brodie. It has been a real privilege to work alongside you as friends and colleagues.
As a retailer, I need not tell you that the economic climate for the last few years has been very tough, especially in Wellington. Had things been rosier, I may well have been able to pass on the baton. But I’m not getting any younger and it’s time to slow down and enjoy the luxury of time to travel, garden and stitch. Personally, Minerva has seen me through good times and bad. I may not miss the daily challenges of running a business, but I will miss the stories, projects and inspirations shared with customers. I leave feeling proud to have carved out the unique niche in Cuba Street that Minerva has filled for so long.
