Stopped over at while I was briefly in Boston, can’t believe it’s been 13 years now since I graduated the program. Some scroll carving progress. I like to establish the bevel on the scroll sooner than later in the process, I find it hard to see the real shape of the turns without it. Once I have the bevel started I go back and get everything closer to the final measurement.

Really lucked out with this knot not showing through on the finished arch side. Not opposed to knots, but this long skinny one in particular is not very good looking. Shouldn’t be much left of it once this plate is at its final thickness.

Roughing out the violin corners. I like to use three guide lines: one scribe line marking the rib structure, another marking the edge distance margin, and a broader pencil line for visibility when cutting out the plate on the bandsaw. I bring the corners to about 80–90% of their final shape, finish the edge thickness, and then return at the end to refine the outline and complete the final corner form.
