Book review: Violin Bridges

Michael Darnton reviews a book he admires – Violin Bridges by Gerard KilBride – in this month’s issue of The Strad magazine. “Every violin shop has a drawer of bridges pulled from old violins,” writes Darnton, adding, “The best bridge drawer I know of is the virtual one living…at https://violinbridges.co.uk/, where visitors can see examples of more than a thousand bridges from shops around the world displayed in clear, oversized photos, and accompanied by measurements of their critical dimensions." And now, some of KilBride’s collection has been published in book form. Although it’s not mentioned in the review, KilBride’s book includes photos of several bridges carved by Darnton for Darnton & Hersh Fine Violins. Read review:

One of only about 15 known cellos made by Andrea Guarneri (1626-1798), this instrument was featured in a recent “In focus” Strad magazine article by Julian Hersh, with photos by Michael Darnton. Andrea Guarneri was the patriarch of the renowned Cremonese violin making family that included his sons Pietro of Mantua and Joseph Filius Andrea, and his grandsons Pietro of Venice and Joseph Guarneri Del Gesu. Only the Amati family, with its five illustrious makers (Andrea, Hieronymus I, Antonio, Nicolo, Hieronymus II), shares such a rich lineage. The two families also shared a personal connection: As a young apprentice, Andrea Guarneri was trained in Nicolo Amati’s workshop, lived in the Amati household, and was a witness at Nicolo’s wedding. Read the full article in The Strad’s Aug 2019 issue ("In focus: a 1689 cello by Andrea Guarneri") or at https://www.thestrad.com/lutherie/in-focus-a-1626-cello-by-andrea-guarneri/9173.article (with subscription).

Great post about Lynn Hannings, who not only is a long-time bassist in the Portland (ME) Symphony, but is also a master bow maker; she teaches bow making while Michael Darnton teaches violin making at the Southern California Violin Makers Workshop in Claremont, CA. (Note that in 2019, George Rubino will teach the bow making class; George and Lynn alternate summers while Michael is always the violin making instructor.) More about SCVMW at https://scvmw.com/

Bassists You Should Know - Lynn Hannings

Lynn is presently celebrating her 50th year as a bassist in the Portland (ME) Symphony Orchestra after studying at New England Conservatory of Music with Gary Karr and William Rhein (Boston Symphony). While at the conservatory, she began her studies in bow making with William Salchow, NYC, focusing on double bass bows. In 1990, she was granted a Fulbright Scholarship for advanced bow studies in Paris, France. She operates a bow restoration and bow making business from her home in Freeport, Maine.

Lynn has focused much attention on teaching. This is her 38th year on the faculty of the UNH Violin Craftsmanship Institute teaching rehairing, repairing and bow making. She also teaches bow classes at
Pomona College, Claremont, CA. She cares deeply about the conservation of woods used in instrument and bow making and served as President of the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (IPCI-USA) for 10 years. During that time, she represented the organization at the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Committee which successfully enabled musicians traveling internationally to legally transport pernambuco bows. She received the 2011 Recognition Award in Lutherie from the International Society of Bassists.
