Plant Notes: Bergamot

Most people know Bergamot as the citrus note in Earl Grey tea.

I first fell in love with it through perfumery.

What fascinates me is that Bergamot rarely tries to be the center of attention. Instead, it changes the way everything around it is experienced. It brings lightness, connection, and coherence.

The longer I work with this plant, the more I notice it mirrors something deeply human.

Many of us spend years trying to earn belonging—becoming more productive, more pleasing, more acceptable.

Yet what often regulates the nervous system isn’t achievement.

It’s being seen.

Not evaluated.
Not corrected.
Not improved.

Simply seen.

Just as Bergamot helps different notes coexist within a fragrance, being seen allows different parts of ourselves to coexist within us.

Joy and grief.
Strength and tenderness.
Confidence and uncertainty.

Nothing has to be fixed.
Nothing has to be eliminated.
Everything can simply belong.

What this plant knows:
Harmony is different from sameness.

I first fell in love with it through perfumery.

For years, I was studying different things:

Herbalism
Flower Essences
Perfumery
Nervous Systems
Relationships

Over time, I began noticing the same patterns everywhere.

Lavender softens sharp edges. Regulation creates flexibility. Bergamot helps different notes coexist. Integration creates room for complexity.
Green Mandarin ripens before it’s fully ready. Growth often arrives before confidence. The plants are not teaching psychology. People are not fragrances.
And yet the patterns rhyme.
