One adult getting two kids out the door with all the ski gear is already doing enough arithmetic.

For winter 2026–27, Stevens Pass has a family carpool exception: one adult with two children age 12 or younger can qualify for a free carpool reservation. You still need the reservation for the qualifying dates and arrival window.

The mental picture is first chair. The car is still going to need somewhere to spend the day.

For winter 2026–27 at Sierra-at-Tahoe, Ikon holders aren't included in the free Sierra passholder parking reservations. Carpool eligibility is separate, and reservation requirements depend on your date and arrival time.

Booked a Friday campsite. Still answering emails on Friday evening. It's a familiar way for a weekend to start.

If Saturday is now your arrival day, a paid booking doesn't automatically mean the remaining nights will be held. For California State Parks, contact the park about a late arrival rather than treating it as a cancellation. Those are different requests.

The pleasing bit of a point-to-point ride is not having to pedal back to the car.

The less photogenic bit is making sure the bike can travel on every train, not just the first one. A bike space on one leg doesn't settle the arrangements for every connection or both stations.

For a routine check-in, status, location, plan and next contact make a useful starting point. Agree on the timing and what to do if a check-in is missed before the trip, while you can still talk it through together.

Choosing a PCT start date is partly daydreaming about the trail and partly remembering which day to be at your computer.

For 2027 permits, November 4 is the first release for qualifying spring northbound trips, for people who registered by October 22. Missed that registration? The next window opens November 5 for the January release.

Ski swaps are where one family's outgrown gear might become somebody else's first setup. A school gym can suddenly contain a whole winter of possibilities.

Shopping hours and seller drop-off hours can be different, so check the organizer's schedule before loading the car. No need to arrive with a trunk full of gear just as the sale is closing.
