Dyslexia is one of the more commonly understood conditions to frequently occur with ADHD - but it comes from a cognitive system that tends to result in dyspraxia as well, which is far less commonly understood. These two conditions can manifest in unexpected ways that can be difficult to discern from ADHD itself.

One of the most common responses people hear when talking about their ADHD is that they should "try exercising". While this can feel like unhelpful advice for people who need a stronger intervention, such as medication, it can make a very healthy impact on the day-to-day lives of some individuals by mediating the symptoms of ADHD. Read more from Dr. John Ratey as he explains the neurological basis for using exercise as a coping strategy for ADDitude Magazine.

A renowned ADHD expert explains how physical activity changes your brain for the better and how exercise can act as a supplemental treatment for patients managing their symptoms with medication, therapy, and/or nutrition.

Symptoms of ADHD can make it difficult to maintain the ups and downs of interpersonal relationships. Christina Caron writes for the New York Times about how this strain can manifest and how couples can address symptoms together.

Dual-diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD only became permissible with the release of the DSM-V in 2013. Since then, studies have shown that an estimated 30-80% of children with Autism also meet criteria for ADHD diagnosis, and that an estimated 20-50% of children with ADHD also qualify for an Autism diagnosis. Now researchers are working to understand the relationship between the two conditions and what might cause this comorbidity. Co-occurrence of the two conditions can complicate the management and treatment of symptoms, as well as understanding of individual cognition. Spectrum tells us more.

The two conditions often coincide, but the search for common biological roots turns up conflicting evidence

Anxiety and ADHD tend to co-occur. But why, and how do we tell the difference? The Children's Health Council explains some of the neurology behind this comorbidity, and illustrates some of the overlap in symptoms.

ADHD can also mask the symptoms of anxiety. It's important to identify both conditions to get the best treatment.

Why do ADHD brains crave stimulation? ADDitude tells us about the neurological basis for stimulation seeking behaviors like eating carb- and sugar-heavy foods, playing video games, and partaking in substance use. Sensory regulation explains why people with ADHD participate in self-stimulatory behavior like using a fidget toy!

At times, it feels the ADHD brain is never sated β€” particularly when it comes to common sources of stimulation like video games, s*x, and substances. Here's why your brain craves these things β€” and how it affects your day-to-day behavior.

Studies show that people with ADHD tend to experience chronic states of mental and physical exhaustion, called burnout, at higher rates than their neurotypical peers. This state can be triggered by prolonged stress from responsibilities at work, in school, or from one’s personal life. While burnout is not a condition of its own found in the DSM, it tends to accompany ADHD and ASD due to a variety of causes, particularly sensitivity to sensory input.

Experiencing burnout can cause irritability, decreased motivation, and a negative self-image, among other symptoms. The occurrence of this state can have adverse effects on one’s relationships and career, as compounded stress and anxiety exacerbate symptoms that strain behavior.

A number of resources exist to address chronic states of burnout, but working with a psychologist to design an individualized plan to cope with this issue is ideal.
