Behind the Midway theater around the early 90's to be specific. Then in 1998 Jason started blowing glass in the rear of Primal Decor. With his partner, Jennifer, the races were on; selling glass on the road, in a display case at Primal and national conventions. In 2001 we moved down to Broadway. Now 23 years, a few burns and a pandemic later we present to you a whole selection of stuff that I like, and I know you will like it too.

MY ASK: I would like this to be a multi media event that folks can follow along from home or look back on fondly.

The 2026 Halloween Treasure Hunt will be on Halloween, Saturday the 31st!

Timeline:
-Teaser posts right now like this one.
-Friday afternoon/evening the game announcement post will go up detailing rules, general locations, and times so people can plan.
-Saturday is when three different groups of hide locations will be announced a few hours apart. We have 39 magic wands this Hunt. Each wand will have an individual post with picture clues and important information on that location.

Advice:
-Follow and turn on all our notifications
-Be kind or be blocked
-Read the rules and follow them. Two reasons. First they keep the game smooth, fair, and able to be continued in the future. Second is they can be considered clues as to where the item is hidden.
-Look through our timeline at past hunts. There are hundreds of them. You can see how the games unfolds and get clues to how we tend to hide things.
-Save posts to your phone in case coverage drops
-These are the toughest hides yet so be prepared for it to be difficult. We have all the clues needed to help as the hours pass. We really do mean difficult. Often all you can see or feel is the very end of the wands or the string it is tied to.
-Respect every location you hunt in. They are all public spaces, but if we litter, harm the plants or are otherwise disrespectful it could shut these hunts down entirely. We don't hide anything in a way that requires destruction so that is a waste of your time.
-LM hunts- Limited Mobility hunts are designed to even the playing field for those with limited mobility, including the use of many assisted mobility devices. I will detail site specific information on these hunts if relevant. You will need a search stick to poke and prod around, or even a grabber arm. Weather may worsen terrain after I was there, like mud.

There are now 39 wands patiently waiting for their wizards in key locations from Crescent City to Garberville and east along the Trinity River. Halloween, Saturday the 31st will be the day of discovery. Check out all the recent and upcoming posts for rules, hints, tips and pre-game clues.

Reminder:
There is a one wand per person limit. To clarify a question from the past, you cannot give your wand away in order to keep hunting. Strict one wand per person to keep things cool.

The wand finding treasure hunters are welcome to keep going on the hunts with their team all day, but they should really just hang around with an air of victory while everyone else searches. A not-so-low-key brag you could say.

Some notes on how I hide:

-I am gentle hiding them. If you are careless or trample plants you risk breaking a wand. Some hides get much HARDER because people fully buried the treasures by being careless.
-I used to try to make them "just hard enough". Sometimes it would take a long time and all the clues, while other times people would find it within minutes. Now I just make them as hard as I possibly can given the parameters of the location.
-Some are tied to something. Sometimes I use a fishing line. Sometimes that line is all you can see. You can see it from a safe place without harming plants or yourself.
-You do NOT and SHOULD NOT harm the plants and environment you are hunting in. This is a big clue to where I am NOT hiding them. If you search carelessly you may break a wand.
-The way I do use plants are could be under a crown of dead fern leaves, in the crook of a tree branch, at the base of a tree, in animal pass throughs, in pockets at the base of a dune grass, or in a natural nook created by a cluster of plants. In all of these situations you can either see or touch the items without harming any plants.
-I use natural holes, pockets, and depressions a lot.
-I am not going to put you in danger where I hid them. You don't have to risk falling or getting poison oak. If there is oak on scene I did not hide it there. Dealing with blackberries is the worst I will do to you.
-I often push the limits of the item being "within the frame of the image". I am really trying to make it hard for you. Some hunts take dozens of people the full two hours to finish.
-I must hide things in a way that people don't find them before the day of the hunt. This works 99% of the time. It is also a clue for you to consider.
-I must hide things in a way that will not get washed out by tides, large waves, or the rising river.
-If there are any special conditions, such as crossing water, I will tell you. You can assume that it will always be on "this side" of the river or stream.

This should give you an idea of how they are hidden. You can also look at past hides. This tells you exactly how I have done it in the past.

IMPORTANT: Hunts are now on Facebook only! Insta-hunters please join us @ STILHumboldt on FB on the big day.

It was a tough call but now that we are pushing 125+ hides per year between the two big events it has to be this way. There are a bunch of reasons it makes things better for me, and since I am still enthusiastic about these hunts I don't want to get burnt out.

1. Scheduled posts often don't upload on Insta. I have had about 20% of posts fail, which means I need to be near a computer to quickly fix, but it still takes precious time.
2. Part of the game is posting your selfie if you win. It builds trust among hunters and validates the hunt. On Insta people have to send to my messages and then I have to check different inboxes. On this many hunts it is too much.
3. It doubles the posts, which need to be monitored. Switching back and forth between platforms to see if it is found is difficult. Hunters have mentioned this too.
4. I want to join you on the hunt and livestream more. I can only do this if things are automated and smooth.
5. Ten image per post limit and character limits require special formatting for many insta posts, such as clue packs.
6. Facebook really is easier to facilitate the game because we can use media to communicate in the comments under the post.

If you are concerned about privacy on the platform you could get a google voice temporary number if you want to keep data intrusion to a minimum.

I could call it good but I am just on a mission. Still time to set up a few more hunts.
