📚 1,114 BOOKS.

That’s the EXTRA number of books the average independent bookshop will need to sell every year just to cover rising business rates.

Huge thanks to for hosting us and bringing this story to life so powerfully in their shop, and the on Sunday for covering the issue (link in bio).

New analysis shows the scale of the pressure facing independent bookshops in England:
• Over 400 shops (those not eligible for Small Business Rates Relief) facing average annual increases of £4,563
• Total aggregated business rates burden on bookshops rising by 45.1% by 2029/30 (from £4.14m to over £6m)

On average, this means a bookshop must sell over 1,100 extra book sales every year just to stand still - a major challenge on already tight margins.

This risks reducing investment in shops, community outreach, and high street vibrancy, with bookshop businesses potentially at risk.

We’re calling for:
✔ Permanent business rates relief
✔ Reform of the SBRR cliff edge
✔ Index-linked thresholds
✔ Better Resourcing of the Valuation Office Agency

Independent bookshops are vital to our culture and communities - they deserve business rates that allow them to thrive, not fight to survive.

Another great night last night at our book club! Thanks as always to .lounge for letting us host in your fab venue ❤️

This month we were discussing ‘Atmosphere’ by Taylor Jenkins-Reid. Thank you to for supplying us with fab tote bags and book club questions!

Swipe to see our favourite book club member, I know we shouldn’t have a favourite, and she doesn’t even talk about the books(!) but she’s so lovely and well behaved we let her come anyway 😉

Swipe again to see our next book club choice, this time it’s historical fiction from the wonderful , and we’ll be discussing this in July 💙

The Pritchards team and our favourite books!

Mine has only very recently become a new favourite, ousting Wuthering Heights and The Grapes of Wrath from my personal top spot!

Have you read any of these? Or might you now be tempted to read one of our faves after seeing them here? We obviously highly recommend them 😉

Read on to find out more about this must-read book!

“During his time as Children’s Laureate, the bestselling author Frank Cottrell-Boyce travelled the country, meeting children and young people where they were: in schools and libraries, in young offenders’ institutions and prisons, many of them living in extremely precarious conditions.

As he met these children, he began to reflect on stories from his own childhood and on children’s lives in Britain during his lifetime – the imaginative connections we make and the sense of community that are so vital to our future adult selves.

A British Childhood tells the story of what it means to be young in modern Britain. It is at once a searing condemnation of our failure to look aftfter the nation’s most vulnerable citizens, and a call to arms to all of us to protect the innocence, and the imagination, of childhood.”
