When water gets low and temperatures climb, fish are already under a ton of stress. There’s less water, less oxygen, and fewer cool places for them to get to. The food supply can take a hit too, which means fish are packed into smaller areas with more fish competing for less food. Trout can become exhausted, stop feeding normally, get sick, and in severe conditions, die. That’s why fishing these areas during extreme heat and low flows can do more harm than we realize.
A fish that’s already struggling has a much harder time recovering after being hooked, fought, handled, and released. Just because it swims away doesn’t mean it’s going to survive. If the water is too warm or the flows are dangerously low, the best thing we can do is leave those fish alone. Find cooler water, fish somewhere else, or give the river a break. Protecting the fishery today means there will be a fishery to enjoy tomorrow.
If you dont have a thermometer to check the temps, stop by the shop or call for water conditions!!!
