From its beginnings in Iran, Catalina Rug has been in the rug business for three generations. The US store was launched in 1999 in a small front store in Redondo Beach, a beach city in Southern California. It is operated by the owners Jeff Shadkam and Rose Shadkam. Jeff Shadkam is the 3rd generation in his family to be in the rug business and has over 35 years of experience. Rose has over 17 years

of experience and loves helping customers with choosing the perfect rug for their home. Always striving to improve our customers’ experience, we were one of the first rug stores to go online. The company expanded quickly and is now a worldwide online rug store. Catalina Rug currently operates out of a large warehouse in the city of Torrance in sunny Southern California.

This 5'9" × 9'1" Nain carries the Habibian signature, the name that defines fine Nain weaving. Silk and wool at 625 KPSI, with silk highlights threaded through a soft blue medallion field, framed in beige with brown, peach, and red. 50–60 years old and beautifully kept.

Look between the pile and the fringe and you'll find a flat-woven band — the kilim end. It's not trim: it locks the first and last rows of knots so the rug can never unravel.

Four rugs — a Tabriz, a Moud, a Hamadan, and a Kazak — and one detail they all share: those tassels aren't decoration. They're the exposed ends of the warp threads, the vertical backbone that every single knot is tied onto. Cut them flush and the knots have nothing to hold them.

Bonus: the fringe is one of the fastest ways to spot a machine-made rug. If it's sewn on as an afterthought, it's not hand-knotted — on the real thing, the fringe grows out of the rug itself.
