So many small details in running our zero waste market.
Including our near-continuous operation of our plastic-free dehydrator. Nothing like a fresh dried banana (tastes just like banana bread without all the filler)

Mats are platinum silicone, gloves are certified compostable food service gloves.

So grateful for the anonymous donor that has made these public health focused film screenings available at Film Streams - knowledge!! - such a great gift to our community 🩵💚

The Omaha Checkup continues in March with a free screening of THE WHITE HOUSE EFFECT! A riveting look at a key moment in the history of the climate crisis, the film travels back in time to document how a crucial opportunity to take real action on global warming was not just squandered but deliberately undermined.

Prior to the screening, attendees are invited to indulge in heavy hors d'oeuvres from Fifth House Omaha at 6 pm in the Film Streams lobby. Be sure to stay after for a panel discussion about the film, the climate crisis, and what we can do in our community.

Woven entirely of archival material, the documentary focuses on the pivotal years of the George H.W. Bush administration—1988 to 1992—when the entire country was waking up to the reality of global warming and Bush had pledged to use “the White House effect” to tackle it.

A local store owner brought her life’s mission to fruition when she opened Omaha’s first one-stop refill market in 2019, becoming the first completely zero waste shop for Omaha residents and college students to start existing green.

❄️ Winter Break: We close every year during this time (🎄12/24 - 1/1🗓️) so the whole team has a chance to rest, reset and prepare for the year ahead.

✨Reopening Friday, January 2nd: We are very excited for 2026 as we have a lot of exciting changes coming! All of which will help expand our impact and make it easier for more people to “exist green”. 🩵💚

Tuesday, December 23 is the last day to shop with us in 2025 (we will be open normal hours 11-7)

Our website will be accessible while we are closed for any last minute gift cards (refill choice is the greatest gift!). You can also build up your shopping list 🩵 for when we reopen. Any orders placed on website during the closure will be fulfilled in the new year.

OPPD is considering a proposal to extend operations at the North Omaha coal-fired power plant, despite prior commitments to transition away from coal.

Public comments are open through December 14.

I submitted the below letter as my own public comment in that process. I’m posting it here to make my comments publicly available and to share language that others may find useful when writing their own comments.

A little more about our mill and the things we can fresh grind here, including beans 🫘 and gluten free grains. We also grind many of our whole spices and things like flax seeds (using a spice grinder). Nothing beats fresh ground flavor, and the nutrients hold up so much better when everything stays whole until you actually need it. 🩵💚
