“You’re from where? And you’re calling me from where?”

One of the most epic tales in the history of Raven Ready began to play out in the third week of March. It started with an email inquiry. The customer was interested in a Northwind 17. Several messages were exchanged. Eventually we connected over the phone. They were on a road trip and wanted to stop by in a couple days. I explained I wouldn’t be available then due to a family commitment. So I started asking more questions hoping to find a suitable alternative that worked for both of our schedules. And this is where the story started blowing my mind.

The customer was from Washington state. They were pulling a trailer on a cross country road trip to purchase an actual boat (🛥️ ) on the east coast. However, when they arrived it was not what they expected and they bailed on the purchase. Hoping to maximize the trip, they started searching for other craft that interested them along their planned route home. It turns out Raven Ready happened to have a canoe that had been on their bucket list. As we were discussing schedules and timing, I asked a simple question just trying to gauge how far they were from my location. The answer is one that will live in RR lore. “We actually just pulled up to the beach here in Cape Cod.” 🏖️

In order to accommodate my schedule, they agreed to extend their trip by a couple of days. And on a March Monday morning at 8am, they rolled up as planned.

“Act your age.” “Age is just a number.”

The new owner of this Northwind Solo threw me for a bit of a loop. Initially we spoke over the phone. I understood he was retired and enthusiastic about finding a solo canoe. When he arrived, he was full of energy and I would have guessed his age as mid seventies. After loading the canoe and hearing more about his plans, I learned he was 84 years young. He immediately recognized the surprise on my face. I explained he just set a new mark in the history of Raven Ready customers.

🛶 Raven Ready has paddles 🛶

Very excited to announce that Raven Ready is now an official dealer for Bending Branches paddles. Located in Osceola, WI, Branches LLC is the world’s largest manufacturer of canoe and kayak paddles.

Customer demand has always been there. And for several years I attempted to source adequate quantities of quality used canoe paddles. That proved difficult, as did finding a small shop local paddle maker that could provide selection, volume, and approachable price points.

When I spoke with the Branches team at Canoecopia and explained the Raven Ready story, they seemed eager to work with me. In fact, almost immediately upon returning, I received an email invitation to tour their factory. It was awesome to see how products I’ve personally used for over twenty years are crafted from raw blocks of wood.

Presently I am stocking two straight shaft models (Loon & Arrow) and two bent shaft models (BB Special & Java 11). New factory cosmetic seconds will also be stocked as they become available. As a dealer, Raven Ready can offer customers access to any product in the Bending Branches/Aqua Bound family of canoe and kayak paddles.

The first BB Special went home with a boat on Saturday afternoon.
