The x Approach 120 has officially landed at Orvis HQ and its maiden voyage was last weekend.

The day started off as a humbling streamer morning. Eventually, after a few fly choices were put to rest, we had big browns on the move. Safe to say this boat has found itself at home in the Green Mountains.

TOM’S TIPS // Reducing drag in your presentation Part 3 of 3

Increasing the length of the tippet section in your leader build can greatly reduce drag when fishing through subtle micro-currents on calm water. In some cases, increasing tippet length to 3-5’ feet will drastically improve your ability to achieve a drag-free drift. Inversely, in windy conditions or on stretches of rougher water, reducing the length of your tippet will give you more control and ease of presentation.

The Green Butt Skunk, developed by the late Dan Callaghan, is a classic West Coast steelhead fly but is also very effective for landlocked salmon. Pattern description is as follows:
Hook: size 4-12 salmon hook or steelhead wet fly hook
Thread: Black
Tip: Oval or flat silver tinsel
Tail: Red hackle fibers
Butt: Bright green floss or chenille
Rib: Oval or flat silver tinsel
Body: Black chenille
Hackle: Black
Wing: White bucktail, calf tail, or other white hair

Sometimes the best way to get a good drift with minimal drag is to stand directly downstream of the lane you’re fishing. Simply cast upstream, gathering your line as your flies work back towards you.

In 2022 Lincoln Westby won the Orvis lifetime achievement award for his outstanding contributions to the Belizean Fly Fishing community. Throughout his long lasting career and consistent conservation work, Lincoln has impacted countless anglers with that signature smile. Today Lincoln needs help from the angling community.
