Long read, but I'd love to share my thoughts with all of you! Sometimes the gospel is hard to describe and hard to understand. As a mom, I've thought about how God relates to us a lot like how a parent relates to their children, so for those with kids or even those with a fear of the dark, hopefully this example will be one you relate with.
One of the biggest fears many children face is fear of the dark. When the lights go out, everything feels uncertain. Fears grow bigger, shadows look like monsters, and suddenly the room that felt safe during the day doesn’t feel safe anymore.
Because of that fear, kids often try to avoid bedtime. They stall, argue, bargain, and sometimes even act out just to stay out of the darkness.
In some ways, that’s a picture of us.
We live in a world darkened by sin, and instead of trusting God, we often try to take control ourselves. We resist, we run, and we rebel.
But when a loving parent sees their child afraid of the dark, they don’t ignore it. They bring a night light, something to push back the shadows and help the child feel safe.
And if we, as imperfect parents, would do that for our children… how much more would our perfect Father do for us?
God didn’t send us a small light just to help us cope with the darkness.
He sent the Light of the world.
Jesus says in John 8:12:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
The darkness the Bible talks about isn’t just fear, it’s sin, and that darkness separates us from God. But God loved us enough to step into that darkness Himself.
As Romans 5:8 says:
“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Through His death and resurrection, Jesus didn’t just comfort us in the darkness, He defeated it. He made a way for us to be forgiven and brought back into a relationship with God.
And the promise we hold onto is this from John 1:5:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
That’s the gospel:
God saw us in the darkness we couldn’t escape, and in His love He sent Jesus, the true Light to rescue us and bring us into His light.
