Another early spring painting, when water and trees shimmer with the coming light.

I enjoyed sitting in this well loved park in South Portland, Maine in April. People and their dogs out walking, kids fishing, and the sun beginning to wake everyone and everything.

I set out early one Saturday in May and came across the loveliest of little seaside gardens in Seal Harbor. Nestled on a hillside overlooking Seal Harbor beach, I found stone benches and flowers with trees and ocean and islands. A morning painter’s dream. And it was warm enough to be barefoot. Beatrix Ferrand, American landscape gardener and landscape architect, designed this little park (among many others across Mount Desert Island and beyond). I wonder if she knew how much joy and inspiration her vision would bring for so many for years and years to come.

I bundled up and found some color on a cold rainy day. I don’t often paint from my tailgate (it’s a bit cramped) but this was a sweet way to get out and enjoy one of my favorite spots in all of Acadia: Lower Hadlock Pond.

Peepers, coyotes, mosquitos… all kinds of creative action at Lower Hadlock Pond. Later the turkeys, eagles and thrushes were all making themselves heard. It is magic to reawaken.
