✨Today's artist is Sinikka Smothers, of Huntsville, Alabama!✨

Sinikka is a folk artist who spins bright colors, textures, and themes from her many interests and imagination into vibrant mixed-media pieces.

🧋 Two of Sinikka's works were featured in our Signature Art Show. "Sweet Tea – The Taste of the South", captures her whimsical and humorous interpretation of a tea-drinking armadillo—a creature as connected to the South as sweet tea itself. “Route 66” celebrates the endless variety of adventures that can be found on a road trip across the United States—and was purchased by a travel-loving collector! 🚗

Sinikka’s journey as an artist began during COVID. To keep her grandchildren occupied, she transformed her attic into a space where creativity, beauty, and joy ruled. She continues to work in her “art attic,” exploring new projects and letting her imagination lead the way.

"Clay reconnects me to something ancient & childlike—the simple act of shaping earth with my hands, & watching it transform through fire. I create functional stoneware inspired by nature & everyday life, blending wheel-thrown & hand-built forms so each piece is unique. My hope is that every piece becomes part of someone's table, traditions, & time spent with family & friends.

I discovered pottery later in life while working as a neonatal nurse practitioner. Clay became a grounding balance to the intensity of caring for fragile new lives, offering stillness, transformation, & joy. Today I create in Guntersville, Alabama, where the landscape & community continue to inspire my work."

✨Today's 🔍 artist is Annette Kirkland of Madison, AL!✨

We're honored to feature two of Annette's watercolor paintings in this year's Signature Art Show, themed "What Does America Mean to Me?" 🗽 Her nostalgic painting, "Iconic", was recently purchased by Historic Huntsville Foundation board member Diane Reynolds. Meanwhile, "On My Way Home" has captured the attention of countless gallery visitors with its beautiful portrayal of rural Alabama—and it's still available!

"Annette Kirkland is a watercolor and mixed-media artist known for her landscapes, florals, and local scenery. Inspired by her passion for photography, she transforms the beauty of Alabama and the surrounding region into captivating watercolor paintings.

After a career in interior design and the furniture industry, Annette pursued her lifelong passion for painting. She has studied under accomplished watercolorists Andy Evansen, Matthew White, and Ronald Lewis. A Signature Member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama, Annette has had numerous paintings juried into the Society's exhibitions and has earned multiple awards."
