Most owners think "winterized plumbing" means an RV or camper van is ready for storage.
In reality, your water lines might be clear while other critical systems quietly fail in the background:
The Battery Trap:
A 12V parasitic load as small as 50mA pulls roughly 36 Ah every month. Disconnect switches often miss hardwired accessories, draining expensive batteries past recovery.
The Solar Sequence:
Shutting down batteries while rooftop solar panels are still energizing your charge controller can damage sensitive equipment.
Trapped Moisture:
Rolling up an awning before the inner seam folds dry almost guarantees mold by spring.

RV storage is a systems problem. The goal is to shut down each component in the exact order it needs to be protected, leaving a documented record so spring startup isn’t an expensive guessing game.

We just published our complete Nomadic Innovations Field Guide: Camper Van & RV Winter Storage covering electrical isolation, plumbing component maps, AC maintenance, awnings, tires, and fuel.

There’s nothing better than coming back from an epic trail ride to a cool camper! 🚴‍♂️🏔️❄️

Eric from breaks down how you can pre-cool your rig using the Nomadic Cooling S1 Helix 12V Split System while you’re out exploring for the day.

💡 Pro Airflow Tip:
Pair your S1 Helix AC with a roof exhaust fan! The roof fan pulls the trapped hot air out from the top of the cabin, while the S1 Helix actively circulates cool air throughout the interior—dropping temps faster and keeping power draw minimal on your 12V battery bank.

What actually makes a $2,000+ off-grid A/C worth the investment? Let’s pull back the hood. 🧰⚡
When you’re miles away from cell service, "cheap" equipment isn't an option. You need component-level reliability that won't fry your electrical system or fail on corrugated roads.
Here’s a look inside the engineering of the Nomadic Cooling X2 Gen II:
🔧 PWM Variable-Speed Scroll Compressor: Unlike traditional ACs that blast maximum power on startup (causing massive battery spikes), our compressor smoothly scales output based on demand.
🔧 Brushless Evaporator Fan: Engineered for maximum airflow, higher energy efficiency, and extended operational lifespan.
🔧 Gen II Base Structure: Redesigned with integrated water-management fins and leveling refinements to prevent leaks during severe vehicle tilt angles.
🔧 Serviceability First: Integrated R1234yf service ports mean any standard HVAC technician can service your unit down the road—no throwaway hardware here.
Plus, with our expanded footprint over the Gen I model, you get optimized water dissipation and quieter operation without sacrificing roof real estate.

Available in 48V (and 12V/24V) in both Arctic White and Obsidian Black shrouds to match your build.

You drove hours down a dirt trail to find the perfect secluded camp spot. The view is unreal... but inside the van, it’s an absolute oven.
🌡️Most off-grid travelers face the same frustrating dilemma: deal with noisy, inefficient AC units that decimate your battery bank in hours, or suffer through sleepless, humid nights.
It’s time to stop compromising on comfort when you're off the grid.
The Nomadic Cooling X2 Gen II is designed from the ground up for high-performance off-grid vehicles:
✅ Direct DC Efficiency: Connects directly to 48V (or 12V/24V) battery systems without the energy loss of running an inverter.
✅ Smooth Variable-Speed Scroll Compressor: Eliminates startup power surges and keeps power consumption to a minimum.
✅ Customized Comfort: Choose between Auto, ECO, Full AC, Sleep, or Fan Only modes across 5 fan speeds.
✅ Bluetooth & Digital Touch Controls: Monitor and adjust your cabin temp right from your phone.
✅ Built For Rough Roads: Upgraded Gen II base with advanced water-management fins and durable brushless evaporator fans.
Common Questions Answered:
• Will it fit my build? The redesigned footprint balances maximum cooling output with roof rack space.
• How quiet is it? Brushless fan motors and variable compressor speeds ensure a quiet night's sleep without loud cycling knocks.

Why converting DC to AC to run your camper air conditioner is costing you precious power 🔋⚡👇

Eric from AT Overland Equipment breaks down why staying in a direct 12V DC environment is the most efficient way to run off-grid climate control like the Nomadic Cooling S1 Helix:

🔋 No Inverter Loss: Running 12V DC directly from your lithium battery bank eliminates the efficiency penalty of converting DC to AC and back again.
📦 Saves Premium Space: Skip bulky extra power components so you have more interior storage.
🌙 All-Night Cooling: Get 8–10+ hours of runtime on your battery bank so you can sleep comfortably through hot summer nights.

What type of power system are you running in your rig—12V, 24V, or 48V? Drop your setup in the comments! 👇

Thinking about adding or upgrading A/C in your van or RV? Don't fall into the BTU trap. 🚐⚡️
When shopping for an off-grid air conditioner, BTU ratings are usually the first thing people compare. But buying based on BTUs alone is one of the most common—and expensive—mistakes in custom builds.
To get real off-grid comfort without frying your electrical setup or running your batteries dead in an hour, you need to look at:
• Battery Capacity & Voltage: Matching DC draw (12V, 24V, or 48V) to your system.
• Wire Sizing & Fusing: Ensuring safety under sustained high-load conditions.
• Heat Load Realities: Factoring in insulation, window coverage, and climate zone.
• Physical Mounting & Cutout Dimensions: Avoiding roof structure or interior component conflicts.

Our latest blog post breaks down the exact numbers you need to calculate BEFORE adding an AC to your cart.
