We're sorry, we can't service this e-bike.

Several times each week, we have people come in looking to get service on their e-bikes. While our mechanics can work on many types of e-bikes, we cannot work on bikes that share qualities with a motorcycle than a bike. Our insurance considers these motor vehicles, and we can't work on them.

Durham Cycles cannot service: e-bikes with fixed seat positions (like this picture), folding e-bikes with front and rear suspension, e-bikes with front hub motors, or e-bikes without pedals that drive the rear wheel.

If you're shopping for an e-bike, keep this in mind because it's critical to buy a bike that can easily be locally serviced. They are not all created the same, and many on the market are as powerful as motorcycles and carry real risk to your safety and others.

In fact, there is an alarming rise in trauma incidents, including deaths, for kids across the country who are riding these powerful machines (source: NPR, CBS News).

We want you, kids, and others in our community to stay safe, so don't hesitate to stop in here or your local bike shop for expert guidance with an e-bike purchase.

Getting a new bike is exciting, especially when you're looking at a pricey performance bike. (We're looking at you, road and tri warriors!) Unfortunately, there is no standard bike sizing across brands, which means it can be tricky to buy/order the right size for your frame. Here are a couple things to keep in mind as you consider your options.

1. If you select the wrong size, will the bike brand allow you to exchange or return for the right size? This is important if you're buying online without a test ride.

2. Does the bike have proprietary specifications/parts that limit your ability to make fit adjustments? (In one picture, the seat tube has a limited insertion depth, and the post will need to be cut to the rider's specific measurements. In another, the proprietary headset design prevented changes).

3. Have you had a bike fitting? If so, do you know how to map your measurements to the new bike's geometry? If not, consider a professional fitting before you commit to a bike size.

Of course, there is so much more to buying a new performance bike, but we hope these tips help.

Dave is enamored with Norco bikes, like the gravel “Search” series. He has even chosen the Search as his own daily ride.

We’re building the recent shipment of 2027 Searches, so set aside some time to test ride a Search and daydream about your next off-road adventure.

Lean In, Charge Up
Corners are just suggestions. The Fairfax Electric puts the power down and holds the line - rail it, recover, repeat. This is what "assist" should feel like.

Gorgeous day in Durham! We're open and ready to talk bikes if you're itching for a ride.

Also, a heads' up that we will be closed for shopping this Sunday for a team work day. So plan ahead for the weekend if you have any cycling needs.

Cheers.

Let’s face it, sometimes cycling gear can get a bit much and elicit strong opinions from riders. Matching “kit” or unmatched clothing? White or black shoes? Where do you stand?

Regardless of what you wear, two safety items are essential. A helmet, of course, to keep your brain safe. And, this may come as a surprise, you should wear some type of eyewear.

Sunglasses or other protective specs reduce the chance of serious injury in nearly every circumstance.

If you ride on the road, a car tire can easily kick up small rocks or sand without warning.

In the woods, on a mountain or gravel bike, a thin tree limb can give a pretty good smack to the face. All of us at the shop have experienced this, in addition to kicked-up dust, rocks, and even a few rogue bees coming in for a buzz.

You don’t have to channel Terminator with your style, but definitely protect those eyeballs! 👀

We are often asked, “who needs a bike like that?” when customers come in and see these long cargo bikes. Are you curious, too?

Maybe 60% of the time, parents use these Yuba Cargo e-bikes, like the Spicy Curry, to to shuttle their own precious cargo around—young children (from babies to 6 yrs old). Using a cargo bike to shuttle kids around the neighborhood or to school is great exercise and is often more convenient than driving short distances. Kids love traveling by bike, too.

Plenty of people without kids enjoy the Yuba, too. A cargo e-bike is a convenient alternative to driving, particularly in urban areas like Durham and Raleigh. For some, a cargo bike replaces a car altogether!

A few other reasons to consider a cargo bike:

1. Eliminates parking hassles and fees
2. Benefits your fitness (with the perk of e-assist on the all-you-can-eat donut days).
3. Helps you imagine you’re cycling in a fabulous European village (front flower basket and lederhosen sold separately, although Dave’s almost there with suspenders these days).
4. Telegraphs that you love the environment, without all those fading bumper stickers.
5. And, reduces commuting and errand stress. For real.
