Jimmy Carter continues to do good! Today I sold two copies of his book An Hour Before Daylight: Memories Of A Rural Boyhood . One was plain and inexpensive, But the other one had his signature tipped in, so it went for above cover price.

I've just learned that the very first Sotheby's auction was an unsuccessful fraud. Mr. Sotheby claimed that all the books he was selling were at one time owned by a German theologian named Philip Melacthion, even though the collector he got them from denied it, and the marginalia was in several different styles of handwriting. The public was not fooled.

I'm buying books from Charles Grench, who was editor at UNC Press until he retired a couple of years ago. One of the books I bought today is by my one-time (and all-time best) postman, Phil Rubio. The title of the book is Undelivered: From the Great Postal Strike of 1970 to the Manufactured Crisis of the U.S. Postal Service. After leaving USPS Phil got his doctorate at Duke and currently teaches. The Atlantic published what is probably a severely abridged version of this book back in 2020.

After 19 days Amazon has decided to delete my listing for Ni**er Heaven by Carl Van Vechten (yes the title does bother me, but that's the title). So if you want to order a copy online you'll have to do it with a platform that doesn't share Amazon's bold faux-woke policy. By the way, you can still order Ronald Firbank's Prancing Ni**er, Randall Kennedy's Ni**er: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word, and Dick Gregory's Ni**er: An Autobiography through Amazon. My guess is that this is because the other books are in print and the Van Vechten one isn't, so they stand to lose more money by suppressing the others. Maybe I'm wrong and Amazon is making a principled stand whose point escapes me.

One of William Regnery's final acts was to publish a book by Josh Hawley that had been cancelled by Simon & Schuster. Under Uncle Henry, Regnery was a conservative but respectable publisher.

The avowed white nationalist inherited millions from his prominent Republican family and used the money to fund the rise of the so-called alt-right.

I've been giving masks away to people who don't have them, but I've about run out. My experience has been that people who don't wear masks don't buy anything. There's a sign on my door that says "please wear a mask." If you're going to shop in a bookstore, it's expected that you'll be able to read.
