On Thursday, June 23rd at 6pm in Maria's Bookshop, we will be hosting Janet L. Jones to discuss her newest book "A Horse's World: A Neuroscientist's Journey Into the Equine Mind." For lovers of "An Immense World" and "Soul of an Octopus," this book illuminates the mysteries of equine cognition and behavior.

If you are a horse or animal lover, this is a perfect event to check out!! 🐎🧠

We are very excited for Junteenth this year! We will be unveiling our new bookmobile, the "Book B***o" during the Juneteenth celebration at Buckley Park from 4:30 to 7pm. Inside, we will be featuring Black authors and stories for readers of all ages including "Ty's Travels," a children's leveled reader, and "Full of Myself" by Austin Channing Brown.

Meet AJ! She is a bookseller here at Marias Bookshop and has recently taken on the role of Marketing and Events Assistant. She handles our social media and also helps to staff our many author events!

AJ loves reading science fiction and fantasy, and would be more than happy to talk about her favorite books and suggestions in those genres!!

Have you noticed our Summer Glow Up? In addition to the return of the parklet bump out, complete with painted piano courtesy of Durango Street Pianos alongside gorgeous planters painted by Laurie Cullum, our storefront got a little refresh, too! You'll spy a crisp new awning and fresh paint on the windows. Even our Maria's Bookshop waterbird got a touch-up, all thanks to Donny (painter featured in the photo) and the City of Durango's Re:New Grant.

The Re:New Grant is a City of Durango program that provides matching funds to downtown and neighborhood commercial district businesses for exterior storefront improvements. The goal is to support private investment in visible upgrades that strengthen the character and vitality of Durango's commercial corridors. It provides a dollar-for-dollar match up to $5,000 for projects that are visible from the public right-of-way. Funding still remains in the 2026 grant budget!
