Women & Children First Bookstore

Women & Children First Bookstore We are one of the longest-running and largest feminist bookstores in the country, stocking more than 30,000 books centering underrepresented voices.

Women & Children First began in a modest storefront in 1979. Over the years we've moved twice and are now in a northside Chicago neighborhood known for its diversity, q***r-friendliness, women-owned businesses and community spirit. Our staffers include teachers, graduate students, professional writers and storytellers, political activists, board members, and poets. Each of us is a reader, a femini

st, and a bookseller. Our purpose in beginning the store 35 years ago was to promote the work of women writers and to create a place in which all women would find books reflecting their lives and interests. We strive to do this in an atmosphere in which all are respected, valued, and well-served. That is our purpose still, online as well as in the store.

We’re feeling 𝓼𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓲𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓪𝓵 over our upcoming event with fatimah asghar as we look at photos from all our past events with them, dating back to before their first full-length book had even come out!

We’re excited to add Eve L. Ewing and jamila to the lineup for this July 7th event, two people we have also had the pleasure of hosting many times over the years. Ticket link in bio 🫀

Attention Chicago romance readers, especially historical romance lovers! We are very excited to celebrate the release of Sophia Benoit’s THE VERY DEFINITION OF LOVE, a hilariously fun, romping regency romance on Wednesday, June 24th at 7pm! Sophia will be joined in conversation with Jen Prokop, co-host of the Fated Mates podcast. This event is free to attend, but we’d love it if you registered at the link in our bio, just so we can keep an accurate count. We’ll see you then!! ✨🩷💫📖
