Still reflecting on the beauty, power, and creativity that filled Da Book Joint during Black Writer’s Weekend ✨🖤📚

The most sincere thank you to Tamika Newhouse for pouring so much time, vision, love, and energy into building something this impactful for the past 17 years. To create and sustain a space where Black writers, readers, publishing professionals, creatives, organizers, and storytellers can gather in community is truly special. We’re praying this legacy continues to grow and thrive for many more decades to come.

This weekend reminded us just how important creative spaces are. We met so many incredible Chicago creatives, had meaningful conversations, shared ideas, built connections, and even started planting the seeds for future collaborations 👀✨

And a HUGE thank you to our Da Book Joint family. This has never just been a “me and mom” operation. We are surrounded by an amazing team of staff and volunteers who continue to show up with love, care, hard work, and dedication for both us and our community. Events like this truly take a village and we are so grateful for ours.

To every author, reader, publisher, creative, and supporter who stepped through our doors this weekend — thank you for helping make this exactly what it needed to be. 🖤

Some conversations are bigger than books. They challenge us, move us, and remind us why faith, identity, and truth matter so deeply. ✊🏾📖

Join us for a powerful evening with Dr. JP Foster for his new book, The Gospel and My Black Skin, in conversation with Pastor Charlie Dates at House of Hope.

In The Gospel and My Black Skin, Dr. Foster explores what it means to live as both fully Black and fully Christian in a world that often forces the two into conflict. Through biblical reflection, cultural commentary, and personal insight, the book challenges readers to embrace faith without denying identity while confronting injustice, history, and the realities of the Black experience.

🗓 Wednesday, June 3rd
📍 House of Hope | 752 E 114th St
🕖 Sermon begins at 7PM
🕗 Book signing & discussion begins at 8PM

Guests will also have the opportunity to meet Dr. JP Foster and take photos following the conversation.

If you’ve been looking for conversations that pour into both your spirit and your understanding, this is one you don’t want to miss.

Last week’s book signing with Tiffany L. Warren for A Harlem Wedding was EVERYTHINGGG 😭📚✨

Not only did we get an incredible conversation, but we also got all the tea, history, and drama surrounding Yolande Du Bois and that era. The way Tiffany brought these real historical figures and moments to life had the whole room locked in. We absolutely recommend this read if you love historical fiction with depth, emotion, and a little mess 👀

And we HAVE to give flowers to our moderator Barbara Keaton because whew 😂 she kept the conversation flowing, funny, and LIVE all night long. Honestly, she could do stand-up comedy if she wanted to! We’re so thankful for the energy, insight, and joy she brought to the evening.

Missed the event? Don’t worry — we still have signed copies of A Harlem Wedding available online and in-store, PLUS signed copies from Barbara too! And make sure you check out the replay posted right here on our page 🎥

Thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a memorable night 🖤

About last week.

The conversation was powerful, honest, affirming, and deeply needed. What made the night even more special was how personal it felt— less like a traditional event and more like a real conversation between Tiffany and the audience. You could feel the love, vulnerability, wisdom, and connection throughout the entire room.

And we HAVE to talk about the beautiful performance from J Ivy and Tarrey Torae. Truly one of the most beautiful duos we’ve ever experienced — so in sync, so complementary, and so full of love and artistry. Their performance added something incredibly special to the night and set the tone for such a meaningful experience.

Chicago showed UP for Tiffany because Chicago LOVES Tiffany 🖤 and after that night, we already can’t wait to welcome her back again.

Thank you to everyone who came out, asked thoughtful questions, bought books, and helped create such a meaningful experience. These are the kinds of nights that remind us why we do this work.

Join us on Thursday, June 11th from 6–8PM as we welcome acclaimed author Catherine Adel West to Da Book Joint for a special conversation and book signing celebrating her newest novel, Strangers Behind Closed Doors 📚✨

Known for her emotionally rich storytelling and unforgettable characters, Catherine returns with a gripping story that explores secrets, survival, family, and the complicated truths that live behind the walls we call home.

Strangers Behind Closed Doors follows lives that appear ordinary on the outside, but beneath the surface are hidden wounds, betrayals, and deeply human struggles that force each character to confront the truths they’ve tried to outrun. With tenderness and tension, the novel examines what happens when the people closest to us become strangers — and what it takes to heal.

If you love layered fiction, powerful conversations, and stories that stay with you long after the final page, this is an event you do NOT want to miss.
