What’s one small change that can make your home feel lighter for the spring?

Use light-toned tile to reflect and expand space.
To make a home feel lighter as the seasons change, Roca Tile USA suggests focusing on materials that enhance how light moves through a space—starting with tile. Soft neutral tiles in warm, light tones help reflect natural daylight and create a sense of openness, especially when used in larger formats that minimize visual breaks.

Roca suggests tile from its Dolce Vita collection for just this reason. Expansive pieces allow for greater continuity, helping rooms feel more seamless and connected. Subtle textures and gentle movement within the material add depth without overwhelming the space, resulting in an interior that feels calm, modern, and effortlessly inviting.

For those looking to introduce more personality and vibrancy, collections like Amber offer a beautiful way to incorporate richer, more colorful tones while still maintaining sophistication. Warmer, more colorful tile applications—such as elongated wall tiles—bring contrast and character while maintaining an airy aesthetic. Carrying complementary materials throughout connected spaces further enhances visual flow, proving that even modest tile updates can transform how a home feels for the season ahead.

Last month’s Zerolandfill Chicago Chicago event, presented by KALLISTA and Ferguson Home, was a tremendous success, thanks to the dedication and teamwork of our volunteers and our RNDD members. Together, we coordinated 13 material drop-offs to Metro Design Build and 9 pickups, helping ensure valuable design materials found new life instead of ending up in a landfill.

The strong turnout from artists, educators, students, and community members highlights the growing impact of this initiative and the importance of making creative resources accessible. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed their time, flexibility, and effort to make the event possible. The positive impact Zero Landfill has on our local creative community is truly special, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s event such a success.

Special thanks to KALLISTA Michael Kucharski Ferguson Home Bianca Brittany Nevine Alyssa Metro Design Build Inc.

What’s one small change that can make your home feel lighter for the spring?

Renew your space with thoughtful organization.
Making your home feel lighter often begins with a simple but impactful step: taking inventory of what no longer serves you.  believes there is no better place to start than the kitchen, the most hardworking space in the home. A thoughtful reset doesn’t necessarily mean removing everything, it means refining what stays. Start by editing out duplicate tools, unused appliances, and items that have quietly taken up space without adding value. From there, the focus shifts to systems. Every item should have a clear, intentional place, designed around how you actually use the space day to day.

Equally important is understanding hierarchy within your storage. Everyday essentials should live within easy reach, while seasonal or specialty pieces can be stored higher or tucked away. The result is a kitchen that feels lighter not because it’s empty, but because it’s purposeful, designed to support the way you live, cook, and gather.

What’s one small change that can make your home feel lighter for the spring?

Lighten the bedroom with refined bedding.
To create a lighter bedroom,  recommends starting with the bed itself. As seasons change, heavy layers can feel unnecessary.
A lightweight goose down duvet, such as the Barcelona duvet, offers warmth without weight, creating a bed that feels elevated and breathable rather than dense or layered. The result is not just visual lightness, but a more refined sense of comfort. Pairing a lighter duvet with high-quality feather-filled pillows, like the Munich Euro Pillow, adds depth without heaviness. Their firmer composition creates a tailored backdrop that feels composed and architectural, while remaining soft to the touch. Spring is not about removing comfort; it is about refining it, with fewer layers and exceptional materials. A bed that feels lighter in appearance and lighter in experience, and ready for the season ahead.

What’s one small change that can make your home feel lighter for the spring?

Rethink throws and textiles for the season.
Leah Bolger Design highlights the impact of seasonal textiles, particularly throws and pillows. Heavier materials like wool and velvet naturally create warmth but can feel visually dense as temperatures rise. Switching to linen, cotton, or soft sheers instantly lightens both the look and feel of a space. This seasonal shift also creates an opportunity to introduce personality through playful patterns, including retro-inspired prints and expressive motifs that bring renewed energy into the home.

What’s one small change that can make your home feel lighter for the spring?

Let art create clarity, not clutter.
Sometimes, lightness isn’t about adding anything new—it’s about how elements interact. Photographer .mx emphasizes the role of art in shaping how a space feels.
A single, large statement piece can anchor a room and provide visual clarity, allowing the rest of the space to feel more open. Alternatively, a thoughtfully curated series can introduce rhythm and movement—but only when the pieces share a cohesive visual language. The key is intention: art should enhance the architecture, not compete with it.

What’s one small change that can make your home feel lighter for the spring?

Add texture and light through walls and fixtures.
suggests focusing on subtle yet impactful surface and lighting updates. A textured wall treatment—such as wallpaper from Affreschi & Affreschi—can introduce movement and visual interest without overwhelming a space. Paired with lighter accent hues and minimal décor, this approach helps shake off winter’s heaviness. Thoughtful lighting also plays a key role. Luceplan’s design-forward fixtures not only brightens a room but elevates it, proving that even small updates can dramatically shift the mood of a space.
