We are happy to announce COFFIN CARDS are now available at Covet Oddities! ⚰️

Do you ever ponder what others would deem “morbid”? Have musings about death or the act of dying? Do you want to dive deeper into the Great Unknown and explore your own or other’s thoughts and feelings on the subject? Then let Coffin Cards be your guide to exploring what ties all living beings together…

Created and designed by multitalented Chicago local and friend, Alejandro Salinas , “Coffin Cards is a collection of 115 questions with the intention to reflect upon and explore our mortality and navigate grief on your own or with loved ones. They can be used as journaling prompts or as conversation starters with friends and family to begin contemplating important end of life questions. Answering these questions can lead to a more fulfilling life, as well as ease the anxiety and fear around death by increasing our familiarity to it.
With Coffin Cards you will begin the journey to prepare for the great unknown mystery of Death.”
- The Coffin Cards

Stop by and grab a deck for yourself or a friend. In times of wonderment, grief and existential exploration, Coffin Cards can help navigate what is oftentimes hard to grasp. Death comes for us all… so let’s talk about it.

Birds of a feather 🪶

Just showing off our beautiful new taxidermy bird pieces that are available in the shop! 🐦‍⬛ All of these pieces came from the UK and, as always, are ethically sourced- which is a term we wanted to expand a bit more on for the new followers.

Here at Covet both of us owners are vegan in diet and lifestyle- meaning we do not believe animals should be exploited for food, clothing, entertainment or testing, and we do not support any individual, company or industry that uses animals for these purposes. These are our personal ethics and that extends to every single animal specimen within our shop.
We go to great lengths to ensure that our strict ethical code is adhered to when considering an animal specimen to bring in— which means:
1.) We generally only acquire animal remains from people we know. We have friends from both the US and Europe who help us source our pieces. These people often work in veterinary fields or sanctuaries and have been vetted and shown proof of ethical procurement.

2.) We will only ever carry pieces that were a result of natural deaths or vulture culture finds (ie: forest finds or roadkill). We have turned down many taxidermy pieces due to the animals being hunted, trapped or casualties of factory farming. Again, we do not support those industries in our lifestyles and wouldn’t dream of beginning to support them for the shop.

The term “ethically sourced” gets thrown around a lot and has different meaning for everyone it seems. This is just what it means to us. No hunted, trapped, gassed, abused or tortured animal remains will EVER be sold in our shop. This is our promise to not only you, our customers and friends, but to ourselves.

We believe that the beauty of animal remains can be enjoyed and owned by everyone and anyone who should choose to, without the cruelty so often involved in acquiring them.

We hope that you will always choose ethically sourced for your collections, even if not from us. Do your research. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! And if you should want something you don’t see in our shop, let us know and we will keep an eye out for you.

Together we can build a better oddities community 🖤

Our second Covet event takes place this month! This time we are celebrating Women’s History Month in our own way…
In observance of the recent birthday of the Damsel of Death herself, Aileen Wuornos, Covet invites you to join us for 𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙚 𝙉𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙩 on 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝟖 𝐩𝐦, where we will be screening the movie ‘MONSTER’- a poignant, biographical true crime drama directed by Patty Jenkins, starring Christina Ricci and leading lady Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos.

We will be providing fresh popcorn from a real popcorn cart 🍿 and for refreshments we’ll be serving up Aileen’s last meal: black coffee ☕️, as well as some cheap beers 🍺 , just as Aileen had enjoyed right before her arrest in 1991.

After the film, attendees will be enthralled by a short discussion led by our very own .scum and then enjoy exclusive after-hours shopping with a 10% discount on your purchases.
We’ll also have some beautiful new “Saint Aileen” prints created by .wieken available for purchase in the shop as well.

Whether you’ve never seen the film or you’ve seen it 20 times, this evening will be a special and laid back event where we will connect and discuss thoughts and ideas and theories as friends and true crime fanatics and take a deeper look into what truly made Aileen Wuornos an American monster.

This is honestly one of our favorite films, and we hope we can share it, and this evening, with you.

🩸Tickets are $29. Seating is limited to 11 attendees. DM us to secure your spot.

We can’t wait to see you there.

Sometimes songs can convey feelings far better than just saying them, or in this case, typing them… but we’ll try our best to get the feelings in our hearts out to you all…

February was truly an exceptional month for a few reasons— firstly, we celebrated our 8th month as a brick & mortar!! Secondly, we moved to Logan Square to be closer to the shop! We also started working on plans for future events at the shop and we welcomed new items from local friends and artists into our space— but most notably, the growth we’ve seen within Covet has been incredible. We are seeing more and more new faces every day— people who are discovering Covet for the first time, either through word of mouth or seeing us online, and we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you and hearing about what drew you in to Covet.
💗
February is a month where love of all kinds is widely celebrated, and we just want to take a moment to celebrate our love for you. Each and every one of you. YOU allow us to do what we see in our dreams, and we cannot thank you enough. Whether you traveled to us from down the block, from across the city or from out of state, we want you to know that when you enter our doors— you are friends, you are seen and you are SO appreciated.
💗
Here’s to love, here’s to the strange and weird, here’s to sharing moments and milestones and connections we wouldn’t replace for anything in the world….
Here’s to you, our customers… our friends 🖤
💗

We finally know what they mean when they talk about joy….

PRE-ORDER PICKUP folks: Our ABOLISH ICE t-shirts are ready for pick up in store! Just come by any time during business hours and give us your name and we’ll grab your order! 🖤
If you chose to have your shirts shipped: we had a small snag in shipping Saturday night— the mailers we had somehow disappeared during the recent move into our new apartment and we had to order new bags. We will be scheduling a USPS pickup for the soonest available, which will either be tomorrow or Wednesday. We’ll update in our stories when they go out. We apologize for this delay but it’s been a crazy and exhausting several days juggling moving out of an apartment into another apartment while also working the shop, but we will get these out ASAP and into your hands soon friends! We appreciate your patience!!
Any questions or concerns just shoot us a DM!

As always, t-shirt printing & photo by our friend 🖤

𝘑𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩… ❄️✨

This January Customer Appreciation Post is an important one…. It was our first January as a brick and mortar and it was full of surprises— the harsh and unforgiving weather patterns, the early closures, the snowy, empty streets, the slower pace of the days— all were somewhat within our expectations, but experiencing it firsthand as a small business can be scary. Not to mention, the general social unrest, the collective grief of this country which we feel deep in our bones like a wintry Lake Michigan wind, and our own heavy hearts which we dare to carry on our sleeves through what feels like an active Hellscape…. All of these things made for a tough start to the year.
But, do you know what else came as a surprise? The amount of love and support our friends and customers showed during this past month. From friends coming in to toast to the New Year with us, people showing up in -20 below 0 afternoons, travelers from 600+ miles away coming by to support our shop, surprise pop-ins from out-of-state friends wanting to show family the store, people celebrating birthdays and milestones with us, reaching out from other states to purchase online… we are just in awe of this community and the power each individual has to change the day, week, month of a small business like Covet.
We often like to routinely thank the universe for the blessings that have been bestowed upon us in this life (as well as the curses that made us who we are today)— but the biggest thanks goes out to each and every single person in these photos and every single person who came into the shop this month or purchased something from us online. You made this past month exceed our expectations. You keep this dream alive. You change our lives every. single. day… And we couldn’t do any of this without you.

Thank you— from the very bottom of our collective heart. We truly, truly, cannot wait to see your beautiful faces in February. We’ve got some very special things coming into the shop for Valentine’s and we hope that you’ll come by and pick up a little piece of our heart & soul to take home with you to your loved ones ♥️

See you soon 🖤

*PLEASE READ TO THE END, there is a poll!*
Dear friends, we’ve been quiet for a few days— fuming and agonizing over the state of the country we live in, enveloped in the grief and fears of its people and our communities.
We’re deeply saddened over the fact that hardworking people are being kidnapped from their homes, families are being torn apart, children are being traumatized, and law abiding citizens are being literally m*rdered in the streets beneath this cruel administration’s regime.
We are sad, but most of all, WE ARE FVCKING ANGRY.

Borders are BULL💩 imaginary lines with ONE PURPOSE: KEEPING THE COUNTRY WHITE AND LICKING THE BOOTS HEELS OF THEIR “GOD”.

Borders don’t keep out criminals. They keep out people who seek a better life. They keep us divided from our brothers and sisters. They keep us brainwashed into thinking that those born on the other side of those lines are somehow our enemies. THESE ARE LIES SPREAD BY A SYSTEM THAT FEEDS ON FEAR AND BLIND OBEDIENCE. DO NOT ACCEPT WHAT YOUR EYES AND EARS KNOW IS MORALLY WRONG, NO MATTER WHAT THE SYSTEM TELLS YOU.

As a way to contribute to those effected by ICE .maggot spent our days off drawing these 3 designs BY HAND (FVK AI TOO!). We would like you to vote on your favorite t-shirt design, and whichever one has the highest votes, we will have it printed by our local pal and 20% of the proceeds with be donated to the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund (organized by ) and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights ().

In times of darkness and uncertainty, mourning and grief, our outlet is and has always been ART and self expression. Art heals. Art saves lives. And though we cannot bring back the 38 lives taken by ICE, we can stand in solidarity with the movement that seeks to END THE VIOLENCE against our communities.

Please vote in the poll below and in our story for the design you’d like to see on a shirt and we will print the winner.

In closing, FVK ICE. FVK FASCISTS. FVK BOOTLICKERS AND FVK CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM.
LOVE AND POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
