That kryptonite glow is real — hyalite is probably the brightest UV-reactive mineral you can buy without spending a fortune.
Hyalite is a type of opal, but not the colorful play-of-color kind. It's water-clear and usually forms in these bubbly, grape-like clusters — geologists call that botryoidal habit. Most of the showy stuff right now comes from Mexico, especially Jalisco and Zacatecas.
Under normal light it looks like clear glass. Hit it with a 365nm UV light though, and the trace uranyl ions — that's (UO2)2+ trapped in the silica structure — fluoresce an almost neon, almost radioactive-looking green. It's not the opal itself glowing, it's that tiny bit of natural uranium. It's the same chemistry that makes old Vaseline glass glow.
A few ppm is enough for that insane green, and at that level it's considered safe to handle and display. It will register slightly above background on a Geiger counter if you have a big piece, but not a health concern for a shelf specimen. Just don't grind it and inhale the dust, same as any silica mineral.
Why collectors are hunting it right now:
1. It photographs like crazy. UV mineral videos have blown up, and hyalite gives you that instant light-switch moment — clear to glowing green — which does way better than a mineral that just glows a little. 2. Those botryoidal domes catch the light perfectly. A big, water-clear cluster from Mexico with full coverage is display-ready without cutting or polishing. 3. It's still affordable. Unlike uranium minerals that are crumbly or highly radioactive, hyalite is stable, glassy, and you can get a killer cabinet piece for way less than a black opal.
If you pick one up, grab a filtered 365nm longwave light, not the cheap 395nm purple lights — 365nm makes the green pop and keeps the purple wash out of your photos. Check it in a dark room, the glow can linger for a second after you turn the light off.
