Donegal Square

Donegal Square Located in Historic Bethlehem, purveying all things Ireland and the British Isles. A favorite stop for a true celtic experience, minus the passport ✨
(230)

Donegal Square was established in 1985 by owner Neville Gardner as a result of many requests by friends of Neville’s to bring back various items from Ireland each time he visited his family in County Antrim. The name of the shop is taken from the Georgian Square in which Belfast City Hall sits. Neville worked there as a civil engineer before coming to the US back in 1979. In 1996 Donegal Square mo

ved to our current location almost doubling in size and allowing the addition of McCarthy’s Tea Room. Since Neville grew up in Northern Ireland and had the benefit of both Irish and Scottish heritage, it’s fitting that you will find a great mixture of products from all the Celtic Lands. If you have the opportunity to pay us a visit you’ll feel right at home, and maybe that you found a wee bit of Ireland or Scotland located here in Eastern Pennsylvania- no passport is required. Donegal Square has been involved with the Celtic Classic festival since its inception in 1987 and is proud to be associated with one of the best events of its kind in North America, if not the world. Donegal Square and McCarthy's – now McCarthy's Red Stag Pub and Whiskey Bar – are the Celtic Destination in the Lehigh Valley and Eastern Pennsylvania. Specializing in Celtic Imports from Ireland and the rest of the British Isles Donegal Square carries a great range of items from the best companies on both sides of the Atlantic. McCarthy's Red Stag Pub and Whiskey Bar makes many dishes from owner Neville Gardner’s native Northern Ireland family recipes, while offering a range of imported draught beers, a wide variety of British Isles whiskies and a friendly "Irish" pub atmosphere.

Some things never go out of style.

The sweater and cap are two of those pieces — shop staples that have been finding their way home with customers for years. Warm, well-made, and rooted in the kind of craft that doesn't need to follow trends.

The real ones know.

There's a reason it has two handles.

The quaich — Scotland's ancient "cup of welcome" — was designed so both hands were always visible while drinking. A gesture of trust, at a time when trust had to be earned.

Today, quaichs are shared at weddings, homecomings, and celebrations. Each person taking a handle, drinking from the same cup. A small ritual that carries centuries of meaning.

We carry a beautiful selection in the shop and online, each one a piece of living Scottish tradition. If you've ever wanted to bring a little of that history home, you'll find it here.

You might have spotted this little sweater hanging by our fitting room and wondered, “What’s the story here?”

Well, it started life as a women’s extra-large Irish wool sweater...until one wash-and-dry cycle gave it a surprise makeover.

Now, it’s our honorary Wool Care Ambassador, reminding us all that Irish wool deserves tender, loving care. And that tiny onesie next to it? Just there for scale… and a good chuckle. ☘️

Don’t let this happen to your favorite sweater.
Stop by Donegal and see our beautiful collection of sweaters, lovingly crafted to last.

One of Marie's Favorite Things 💜

If you've spent any time chatting with Marie at Donegal Square, chances are you've heard her mention Ribena®.

For many people across Ireland and the UK, it's more than just a drink. It's a taste of childhood, family gatherings, and memories of home. Made from blackcurrants, Ribena® has been a pantry staple for generations and remains a favorite on both sides of the Irish Sea.

For Marie, it's one of those simple comforts that never loses its charm.

Whether enjoyed chilled, mixed with sparkling water, or simply poured over ice, Ribena® has a way of bringing back familiar memories with every sip.

Find Ribena® and more favorites in our pantry.

Knots, spirals, and woven motifs have been part of Celtic art for centuries, carrying stories of connection, continuity, and place.

There is a reason certain patterns continue to appear in Irish design.

These new scarves from Mulligans Ireland bring some of those familiar motifs into pieces made for everyday wear. Soft color, thoughtful design, and just enough detail to keep drawing your eye back.

There is something hopeful about seeing a rainbow over the Irish coast.

A reminder that beauty often appears when you least expect it, and that every landscape is shaped by the many paths that cross through it.

As we welcome June and the beginning of Pride Month, we're grateful for the people and stories that make our community vibrant, welcoming, and uniquely its own. 🌈☘️

Happy Pride Month from all of us at Donegal Square.
