Just in time for Bloomsday, Nuala O’Connor popped in to sign Nora, which is one of my favourite books about Joyce, largely because it has the excellent sense to be about Nora.

Revolutionary concept, I know: putting the woman who actually had to live with the genius at the centre of the story.

And Nora Barnacle is fabulous. Warm, fierce, funny, earthy, sensual, practical, brave, and absolutely nobody’s decorative footnote. She is not waiting politely in the margins while men explain literature to each other - she has no interest in any other genius other than her own man. She is right there, alive on the page, loving, enduring, raging, wanting, remembering.

Nuala O’Connor gives us Joyce as a man, not a marble bust, and Nora as herself: the woman beside him, around him, under everything, keeping life moving while history busied itself turning him into a monument.

It is a timeless book because it understands something still strangely radical: every great literary myth has a domestic life behind it. Somebody is feeding children, worrying about money, crossing borders, making beds, holding grief, and still somehow loving.

Come for Joyce, if you must.

Stay for Nora.

She’s better company.
