Brass Monkey

Brass Monkey A comprehensive repair and maintenance service for brass instruments in Devon, Cornwall and across the South West.

I have been a keen brass player since I was 8 years old, and have played with many brass bands across Dorset, Cornwall, Devon & Wales, as well as orchestras, jazz ensembles quartets, quintets and so on.....
In 2001, I began performing minor repairs on school instruments and very soon was approached by the town band to service their instruments as well. Having trained at Trevor Head's school of ins

trument repair, I have gained enough experience to set up my own business.
I pride myself on the quality of service that I offer and the satisfaction of my customers. I offer a comprehensive repair and maintenance service for brass instruments in Devon, Cornwall and across the South West.

It is very rare that I ask for help, but here goes…..There is a Carol concert in Downderry on Sunday 21st Dec, and the Deviock Brass Ensemble, who are providing the accompaniment is missing it’s “low“ end….

Is there a Tuba player, and a Trombone player who would be willing to help out with this event? We will most certainly need to have a practice/rehearsal beforehand.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

A.

I took a gamble on an Ebay cornet, and took it straight to Andy. He has done a fantastic job and I'm really happy with it. A quick turnaround, excellent communication and very reasonably priced.
Thank you Andy :-)

Well, the BrassMonkey certainly has been busy...among other things:

This superb Yamaha Cornet arrived in a non-functioning state...all slides and valves seized and an unidentified greasy type residue coating both the inside and outside of the instrument (and all over the inside lining of the case!).

A little bit of heat, some penetrating oil and gentle persuasion and the slides and valves were freed.
Then a thorough internal & external clean, new valve felts and corks for the waterkeys, and finally a run on the polishing wheel...

Et voila....a beautiful and 'lovely to play' instrument all back up & running!

From major problems to minor issues...The BM is always ready to straighten out the next musical injury!

Another repair, another satisfied customer:

"Andy (Brass Monkey) did a repair to my Bach trombone.

It was knocked and fell off its stand during a concert and the slide was jammed. Andy worked his magic and the slide is now as good as new.

His workmanship is excellent and I recommend him for instrument repairs."

When The Monkey met The Mammoth! This beast of an instrument had sustained some severe trauma to its lacquered coating, as well as some quite bad brusing to its underside...after careful treatment, this Besson 700 series BBb tuba had been debruised, and the damaged lacquer stripped back to brass. All seized slides and valves freed, lapped and lubed. What was essentially just a lump of metal in someones garage, is now a fully working instrument - and a big-un at that. A really fun and challenging fix for the monkey! And more to come later!

The Monkey does its business again...this beautiful B&H Imperial Euphonium was made in 1981/2, and was desperately in need of some monkeylove. Numerous dents and bruises removed. Scratches and pitting polished, replated with silver and a thorough internal clean and this once neglected instrument has now been restored to a playable condition, whilst at the same time looking rather pretty. The higher the monkey climbs, the more of its brass you will see!
