20% VAT is the problem.

UK restaurants, pubs and hotels charge customers 20% VAT. In France, Spain and Italy it’s 10%. In Ireland, 9%.

That gap lands on businesses already running on thin margins. Nearly 100,000 hospitality jobs have gone in two years. 1,839 licensed venues closed between March and June. 23% of pubs and restaurants are trading at a loss.

We supply professional kitchens across the UK and work with chefs every week. We see what it takes to get a service out, and we think that work deserves a tax system that lets it thrive. So we’re backing the call for a 10% hospitality rate.

Before the Budget on Wednesday 28 October:

- Sign the petition at vatstheproblem.co.uk. More than 400,000 people already have.
- Write to your MP with your own numbers: covers, staff, margin per dish.
- Share this with your team.

Our full article, including the £11bn cost question and how the sector can answer it, is on the blog. Link in bio.
