V.S.O.P. The Quintet
Five Stars
CBS/Sony – 30AP 1036
1979 Japanese Original Pressing (Stereo) NM/VG+
A Direct-to-Disc Acoustic Jazz Masterpiece. 🎺🎹
Recorded live in the studio on July 29, 1979, Five Stars captures an acoustic jazz supergroup at the absolute peak of their powers. V.S.O.P. The Quintet was essentially the legendary mid-60s Miles Davis Quintet, but with the powerhouse Freddie Hubbard stepping into the trumpet role. Side A opens with Hubbard's sprawling, energetic original "Skagly" before transitioning into Herbie Hancock's beautifully complex "Finger Painting". What makes this specific CBS/Sony release a true holy grail for audiophiles is its "Master Sound Direct Disk" recording process—the music was cut directly to the master lacquer exactly as they played it, capturing a breathtaking, unedited level of fidelity, dynamics, and raw studio presence.
About the Artists:
V.S.O.P. initially stood for "Very Special Onetime Performance," though their undeniable chemistry led to several massive tours and albums. Featuring Herbie Hancock (piano), Wayne Shorter (saxophones), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums), this quintet single-handedly spearheaded the late-70s acoustic jazz revival. In an era dominated by electric fusion and disco, they proved that swinging, high-wire acoustic post-bop still possessed incredible fire and relevance.
