One week away! Join Nicolette Little at Another Story for the Toronto launch of From Red Dresses to Memory Stones: Multimedia Activism and Gender-Based Violence in Canada.

Nicolette Little interviews numerous activists and explores five anti-violence media projects in detail: the REDress Project and Disposable Red Woman installations, which draw attention to Canada’s crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls; the digital memorialization of murdered Ontario women on each anniversary of the “Montreal Massacre”; the documentary Slut or Nut, filmed during the lead-up to a r**e trial; and the Memory Stones Project, in which beach stones are painted with anti-violence messages, then posted across social media. Little challenges assumptions about GBV and provides insights into citizens’ creative, daring, collaborative, and memorializing ways of addressing it—and the discourses that normalize r**e culture.

Ultimately, this engaging work is about hope, demonstrating that anti-violence activism is a matter of will and can be done in ways that prioritize consent and protect activists’ well-being.

This Thursday! Join Danielle Wong in conversation with David Chariandy for the launch of RACIAL VIRTUALITY: Information Capitalism and the Suggestive Materiality of Asianness.

By putting memes, social media apps, and digital platforms in conversation with more traditional cultural productions like film, literature, and theatre, Racial Virtuality broadens our understanding of racialization in the digital age and challenges traditional notions of cultural production and subject formation. In doing so, it demonstrates how Asianness circulates as a new media form in a digital marketplace of commodified affects, senses, gestures, and tastes.

RSVP at racialvirtuality.eventbrite.ca!

A NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY asks: can the NDP become a vehicle for transformative politics again?

In the wake of Avi Lewis’s breakthrough leadership victory, political figures debate the possibilities—and challenges—of charting a bold direction for the party.
The book features wide-ranging interviews with former and current parliamentarians Matthew Green and Leah Gazan, feminist activist Judy Rebick, historian Ian McKay, and NDP leader Avi Lewis conducted by journalists Desmond Cole, Martin Lukacs, and Luke Savage.

Their conversations critique the party’s record of caution and compromise while making the case for a militant alliance with social movements, labour unions, and a diverse working class. They discuss the outlines of a popular left-wing agenda capable of taking on corporate power, establishment liberalism, and the reactionary right.
