June 7th
I’m writing this as I wait for strawberry sauce to boil for crèpes. I’ve been trying to find words to reflect on this season, but right now, it’s one huge blur. Our season is such a funny thing. Planning for this season started a year ago, prep started months ago, and then for 4 weeks, we put our heads down and hang on for the ride. (I might be mixing my metaphors there?).
Every year there is weather that makes me consider an office job. Every year there is a point where I realize that we just won’t keep up with lawn work, and I have missed 100s of messages. Every year we excavate some fuzzy food from the fridge, and agree not to add up what we spent on convenience food this month. Every year there are 1-3 bad customer interactions max that would have made me cry 10 years ago, and hundreds of wonderful ones that make me beyond grateful that this is my life. Every year I mess up the hours somewhere, or forget to change my voicemail, or the road sign, or find out I’ve been charging 1/2 of what it should have been for some thing because I forgot a decimal on my till.
Yet every year, you come out, show up, and remind us why we do this. You brave potholes and dogs and gale force winds to talk to us about shade plants (we agree there are never enough) and Blight Resistant Tomatoes (game changers) and that flowers remind us of so many things: people we love, loved ones who are gone, that summers are too fleeting and life flies by and we all just want something to help us slow down for a bit.
I admit, I’m really bad at the slowing down part. (Last night I worked until 5:30 and this morning I was out by 7). But plants and nature really do have a way of teaching that! And so I will try to learn the lesson today by making crèpes and hauling out the patio cushions, and hopefully meeting a perfect new nephew! And tomorrow we we clean up, and put so many vegetable and cut flowers in the ground for our CSA and Farm Store. And Tuesday the Future Farmer and I are going shopping for wedding outfits for a family wedding next month. And the peonies are starting and time marches on.
So that’s it, except to say Thank You for being here and coming along with us.
All of our plants that are left are available now for Self Serve. They’re the ones in these photos. Come in, make your choices, add your total. We accept cash or e-transfer.
