Bring your binoculars - Perth’s biggest lake has a stunning new lookout 👀

If you’re into birdwatching or wildlife photography, lock in a weekend walk to check out this new two-level tower overlooking Lake Joondalup.

The new $2.2 million tower and elevated walkway is located on the eastern side of the lake in Yellagonga Regional Park, offering amazing views across the water.

The park is a haven for wildlife, with around 120 different bird species found in the area including the endangered Peregrine Falcon and Carnaby’s Cockatoo 🦆

Keep your eyes peeled for snake-necked turtles, frogs and snakes in the park 🐸

Grab a seat inside the tower and soak in the views while you look for local wildlife in the reeds, water and sky.

📍 The viewing tower is located at Lake Joondalup Park, north of Rotary Park on Scenic Drive in Wanneroo.

Road safety experts say it could mean shorter stopping distances, safer neighbourhoods and, most importantly, fewer lives lost on WA roads.

In this episode of Horizons by RAC, we explore the evidence behind safer speeds and why the debate is gaining momentum across Perth and beyond.

🎧 Listen or Watch now on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

When WA reduced local street speed limits from 60 to 50km/h in 2001, pedestrian crashes in Perth fell dramatically. Now, as more councils consider 40km/h limits on local roads, the debate around safer speeds is back in focus.

Car breakdowns have come a long way in WA, and so have the reasons behind them 🚗

Back in the 1920s, it was rough roads, overheating engines, dodgy fuel and constant punctures keeping drivers stranded.

Cars needed regular maintenance (which many couldn’t afford during the Great Depression), so breakdowns were common 🆘

By the 50s–70s, things improved with more reliable cars, but issues like vapour lock, overheating and electrical faults were still keeping RAC patrols busy.

Fast forward to the 80s–2000s, and cars became more advanced, bringing better safety and performance, but also new challenges with electronics and cooling systems.

Today modern cars are more reliable than ever, but we’re still coming to the rescue for flat batteries, lockouts and the occasional wrong fuel in the tank 😅

What’s the most common reason you’ve needed roadside assistance? 👇
