The winter of 2021 didn’t just end in September — it echoed through the whole season. Budburst arrived late. The summer stayed moderate. And harvest, when it finally came, was up to two weeks behind schedule. That kind of patience is a gift. Slow ripening lets flavour and colour develop fully while the natural acidity stays intact. The industry’s own harvest report called the 2022 crop’s flavour and colour “stunning” — the reward of a season that refused to hurry.
Good things come to those who wait. In 2022, the whole Cape waited.

The rains of June, July and August soak down through the soil and wait — a reserve the vine will draw on through the long, dry ripening months of summer.The winter before our 2022 harvest was generous. Groundwater levels were replenished across the winelands, and when the heat of February came, the vines had everything they needed to finish the job without stress.Stressed vines make hurried wines. Rested, watered vines made Somesay 2022.
