Story time: For my newer followers, during Covid I started a business baking home made cakes, nothing fancy, the range was limited to traditional favorites, think Chocolate cake, carrot cake, hummingbird cake, Victoria sponge and of course New York baked cheesecake.
I decided to combine my love of baking, my passion for presentation and gifting, all wrapped up into one and launched “Gift a cake”. With Covid cases increasing daily, everyone stuck at home, the business gained traction quickly, offering the “perfect” get well gift.
I took risks, driving around Joburg delivering every order myself. And then Covid restrictions slowly lifted, and the orders kept coming. I then went out and got a real job and baked in the evenings and on weekends. But the reality was that when I sat down and did the math, the business was not mathing! The costs vs the profits were just not viable. While it was short lived, I loved doing it. It was the perfect offering at the time.
Why am I telling you this story? My very first paying client at the time, was a lovely lady who lived at Steyn City. She would order cakes (she only ever ordered the New York baked cheesecake) for her employees, family & friends. When I decided to stop baking she was mortified and begged me to please bake for her. Because she was my first client and such a loyal client, I agreed. She then immigrated to Portugal, but the orders never stopped, today 6 years later, I still bake for her. Her standard order, Cheesecake with fresh berries, but only on one half of the cake, and she chooses the ribbon colours, today’s order, light blue & navy blue.
Her daughter just collected the cake, and tells me the thing her Mom misses most about living in South Africa is my Cheesecake.
Happy Saturday everyone. Cheers to Cheesecake and wonderfully loyal customers x
