As we wrap up this weekend with Monyamane Crafts, we reflect on his words that yes recognition boosts the artists' and their work and who they are but it doesn't guarantee sales. Artists at the end of the day are businesses and legacies happening in real time.

Hands of Heritage, Heart of the Vaal
By: Nthabiseng Maponya

From the quiet town of Koppies in the Free State, where the fields stretch wide and the air carries the rhythm of rural life, to the bustling industrial hub of Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng’s Vaal Triangle, the journey of Ntate Monyamane ; affectionately known as Jakkalas Monyamane , is a story of artistry rooted in heritage and blossoming in resilience.Raised in Koppies, he discovered early that his hands were gifted.

A childhood memory still shines: winning a Grade 5 drawing competition against pupils of all ages, proving that talent knows no boundaries. That victory was more than a prize; it was a promise of what his hands could one day create.Years later, curiosity led him to YouTube, where a simple video sparked a new chapter. Watching an artist work with glue and wool on glass, he thought, “If he could do it, then it’s possible.” That moment ignited a passion that transformed discarded glass bottles into treasures, each piece washed, decorated, and reborn with care and beauty.

Now residing in Vanderbijlpark, Jakkalas continues to weave his artistry into daily life. His creations are more than decoration , they are acts of restoration, giving new life to forgotten objects and reminding communities of the beauty hidden in the ordinary.Yet, he speaks candidly about the challenges artists face. “Interviews are good for exposure,” he says, “but the saddest part is what happens after". Recognition can only go so far. Fame isn’t a sale, and it doesn’t help businesses thrive.”His words echo a truth many creatives know, artistry is not only about applause, but about sustainability and dignity.

From Koppies to the Vaal, his journey is proof that the beauty of a man truly lies in his hands; hands that carry heritage, craft, and hope, he even says in his words, "botle ba monna bo matsohong"!
