ed its doors to the public on Wednesday 24 October 2007. It was conceptualised as a “village-street” retail theme comprising a total floor area of 44,000m² of which 30,000m² are dedicated to retail space. In the design of the village, the developers and architects adhered rigidly to the governors of successful retail flows. As such, the village is located between two strong anchor retailers, Woolworths and Pick ‘n Pay on either extremity. Retail space is designed as individual buildings with slightly different characters, but with a strong family resemblance to the architectural precedent. Trees, canopies, street signs and public art all add to a character and sense of place that aim to become no less than the very town centre of the Irene node. At Irene Village Mall, the developers steered away from the norm and dared to be different while at the same time not discounting proven precedents. The walkways are covered, but open and spacious to provide a real village atmosphere. The shopping flows encompass a crescent boulevard that starts and ends in a court node in front of each anchor store. A village street completes a racetrack pattern which brings the shopper back to his starting point without having to backtrack in any way.
