Mpumalanga police launch manhunt after officer fatally shot in Pienaar
Authorities have launched an intensive manhunt for three armed suspects following the brutal killing of an on-duty police officer in Phakane, Pienaar, on Friday evening.
Constable Donald Mathebula, a 34-year-old member of the Pienaar Visible Policing Unit, was ambushed and fatally shot around 21h00 while in his private vehicle, still in uniform, after stopping at a local tuckshop.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Jabu Ndubane, three men wearing balaclavas approached Mathebula and opened fire at close range. In a desperate attempt to escape, the 10-year police veteran lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a tree and a wall.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Bullet holes were found on the rear and right-side windows of his vehicle, and no items were stolen, suggesting a targeted attack.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, condemned the killing, calling it an attack on the state. “We will leave no stone unturned in bringing these perpetrators to justice,” Macie vowed, urging the public to share any information that could lead to arrests.
Mathebula leaves behind a spouse and young child, with psychological support now being provided to his family and colleagues.
