Fogarty's Bookshop

Fogarty's Bookshop Your specialist bookstore for 79 years Fogarty’s Bookshop was started in 1946 by Basil Fogarty in a basement shop in 59 Main Street (now Govan Mbeki Ave).

The bookshop is one of the oldest independent bookshops in South Africa. Basil was joined by his new wife from Scotland, Eleanor and together they became a mecca for book & art lovers. Even holding exhibitions for the likes of Irma Stern. After 59 Main Street, the shop moved to the Library Building on Market Square. And, some years later, to Traduna Mall in Main Street where it stayed for over 20

years. At that stage, the business was taken over by Teresa Fogarty (daughter of Basil & Eleanor) and Terry Impey (Teresa’s partner). With Terry’s help, branches were opened in 6th Ave Walmer & later The Bridge, Greenacres. When the Main Street branch closed, the Walmer Park shop was opened. Later The Bridge branch closed and joined Walmer. We were at Walmer Park for 25 years. Fogarty’s is now firmly established at 212 Main Road Walmer & serves the book loving public of Port Elizabeth (and the surrounding areas) with all their reading requirements. Ordering & sourcing books has always been one of the services we offer, along with helpful service to our loyal customers. Please contact us with any questions about books and, we will gladly try to assist you.

Sadly Terry, Basil & Eleanor are no longer with us
but, they will always remain in our hearts & memories and,
in the soul of Fogarty’s Bookshop

NOW IN STOCK R300.00

This book is about predicaments, dilemmas and challenges before, during and beyond the post-1994 political and social transition – and its continuities and discontinuities. It is about Badat’s place in universities and political and social movements, and efforts to reshape institutions, policies and practices as part of new constitutional values and social goals arising from the legacies of colonialism and apartheid and the global hegemony of imperialist and increasingly authoritarian Western countries.

Saleem Badat is a Research Professor in the Department of History at the University of the Free State, South Africa. His recent publications include Research and Activism: Ruth First and Activist Research (2025) and University of Durban-Westville, 1961–2003: Undoing Apartheid, Building a Non-Racial Culture (2025).

Saleem Badat’s association with universities spans more than 50 years. Beginning as an anti-apartheid student militant, he has served as director of the Education Policy Unit at the University of the Western Cape; the first head of the Minister of Education’s advisory body, the Council on Higher Education; the first black vice chancellor of Rhodes University; and the first programme director of International Higher Education and Strategic Projects at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York.

NOW IN STOCK R330.00

Tannie Maria is wrestling with a fear of the dark, and her hen, Henrietta, has PTSD. But this doesn’t stop this intrepid agony aunt from going undercover with her fiancé, Detective Henk Kannemeyer, to the Karoo Wilderness Reserve. Their mission: to save the vetplantjies. At the KWR luxury game lodge, they spy on guests and support the Anti-Poaching Unit in a battle against dangerous criminals. Jessie attends the succulent symposium addressing international succulent poaching. Then, there is a murder ...

Our favourite Ladismith sleuths – Maria, Henk, Jessie, Hattie, Reghardt and Piet – engage with a colourful cast of characters, including a barefoot artist, a botanist cowboy, a singing gardener, a shaman, and a sangoma. Between spying on tourists, solving murders, writing agony-aunt letters, eating divine food, and having epiphanies, Maria and Henk get fabulous fashion tips from a couturier and his Baroness.

But soon they too will be in the crosshairs …

Across Poland, old kiosks are being transformed into small book corners where commuters can pick up free reading material. Instead of leaving unused structures empty or removing them completely, communities fill them with books, magazines, and shared shelves. A once-forgotten kiosk becomes a tiny public library, offering people something useful during daily travel.

The idea works because kiosks are already placed in visible, accessible locations near streets, stations, and neighbourhood paths. People can leave books they no longer need and take something new without payment or formal registration. This keeps reading easy, casual, and open to everyone, especially those who may not visit larger libraries often.

Beyond books, these converted kiosks bring life back to unused urban spaces. They reduce waste, encourage sharing, and give commuters a quiet moment of discovery during ordinary routines. By turning empty structures into community reading spots, Poland shows how small public changes can make cities feel more thoughtful, creative, and connected.
