Has the problem of listing trout as “invasive’ by the authorities been resolved? The answer is an emphatic NO. FOSAF was able to stave off the threat by challenging the consultation process right through to the Constitutional Court. Since then, this matter which is over 10 years old is still subject to a Minister’s Task Team with discussions between FOSAF and its allies and the DFFE. However, other issues mean FOSAF must negotiate with government regarding policy, draft or existing legislation which could have a negative effect on recreational angling and freshwater fisheries. This has already cost FOSAF at least R900 thousand and it is anticipated another R200 thousand or more will be needed by FOSAF in the next year. That is part of why FOSAF needs your support. We’re proud to introduce our monthly fly casting clinics, running on the first Saturday of every month. Pop into our shop in Paarl or book your spot for the next clinic through the link below.

These clinics are aimed at building skills and confidence in a relaxed, community-driven environment and are suitable for:

- Beginner fly anglers starting their casting journey

- Intermediate casters wanting to improve accuracy, control, and consistency

📅 Format:
• Beginner clinic every second month
• Intermediate clinic on alternating months

👥 Only 6 anglers per clinic, allowing for hands-on guidance and personal feedback
💰 R650 per angler

Want to learn more about Kabeljou (Kob) and how to successfully target them on fly? Join us on Saturday, 17 January, for a Kabeljou on Fly event with Jimmy Eagleton at our shop in Paarl.

The event will cover one of the most successful fly patterns for Kob, and you’ll be able to tie your own during the event too. So bring along your vice, tools, and thread. If you don’t have any fly tying tools, just get in touch and we’ll sort you out.

If fly tying isn’t your thing – there’s still a lot to learn during the event. We’ll also cover how to set up your rig, how to fish the fly, and typical locations where you can target these special fish.

will also be part of the day. They are properly obsessed with Dusky Kob, not just catching them, but making sure they are still around for the next generation of fly fishers. They will have limited-edition illustrated Dusky Kob stickers to hand out, info on our Dusky Guardians conservation initiative, and their latest Kosi Sun Hooded shirts on display. If you are learning how to target Kob on fly, this is also your chance to learn how to handle, release, and protect them properly, plus score a few Walt Gear perks along the way. Catching fish is how you fall in love with them. Protecting them is how you keep the story going.

How beautiful is this Cape Streams fish? Guest of ours got it yesterday on a guided day with us.

While most of the Cape Streams rivers are very hot at the moment, there are some spots where the water is cool and the fish very active.
