Thorne & Daughters’ Rocking Horse is the ‘poster child for new-wave white blends’. It’s been a top performer for more than a decade, and the 98-point 2024 is ‘a wine of presence’, says Christian Eedes. Taking its aesthetic from white Burgundy, rather than the Rhône, this multi-variety blend offers immense value at R370.✨

In 2025, the Cat’s Cradle sees the inclusion of an old vine Swartland vineyard, making it the greatest release in recent years. Eedes agrees, scoring it 97 points. ‘Intricate and detailed, yet equally immediate in its pleasure’, it continues to be the most limited of the set.

Old vine Sémillon creates some of the most incredible and age-worthy wines in SA, and the 96-point Paper Kite 2025 is among the greatest expressions of this variety. From a vineyard planted in 1963, expect notes of soft citrus, thatch, spice and vibrant, delineated fruit.

The unique Snakes and Ladders is a favourite at Brice & Burnett and the 2025 is superb. Powerful, poised and flavourful with a dry finish, the wine has a firm palate that speaks clearly of its origin in the Citrusdal Mountains.

The 95-point Tin Soldier is 100% Sémillon Gris in 2025. Showing reined-in orange wine characteristics, this graceful release offers impressive fruit concentration, freshness and a hint of tannic bite. A ‘wine of considerable charm’, agrees Eedes.

Today’s offer is all about terrific value and immediate drinkability. This is classically styled Claret – unmistakably French with its bone-dry, lifted character. Offered at R295 per bottle, you’ll be hard pressed to find twelve-year-old Left Bank Bordeaux at this level. We’re so impressed by the price-to-quality ratio that we’re offering 15% off when buying six or more bottles.🌟

La Réserve de Mauvesin Barton 2014 is the second wine of Château Mauvesin Barton, part of Barton Family Wines in Moulis-en-Médoc. The nose is immediate with dried red fruit, tilled earth and new leather. The palate follows with white mushroom and savoury notes, driven by a fresh, linear mouthfeel and long acidity.

Lilian Barton-Sartorius, ninth-generation at Barton Family Wines, purchased the property in 2011 with future generations of the family in mind. Situated just west of Margaux and planted predominantly to Merlot on clay soils, the estate produces approachable Bordeaux made to enjoy in their youth.

Now managed by tenth-generation Damien and Mélanie Barton-Sartorius alongside Léoville Barton and Langoa Barton, it’s described as having ‘a real soul that envelops you when you visit, casting a spell as you discover the unique charm of the place’.

Stellenbosch is among only a handful of incredible Cabernet terroirs in the world, and Le Riche is its benchmark. The 2023 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is about to be released and it seriously flirts with perfection.🌟

Many collectors think of Le Riche as the Latour of South Africa – not because it imitates Bordeaux, but because it consistently delivers Cabernet with authority, structure and cellar-worthiness. The 2023 is defined by elegance. There’s a new and exciting level of detail that made me keep going back to my glass, but what’s most impressive is the long finish and refreshment factor.

The 2023 is built from 12 different vineyards, their broadest vineyard selection to date, including important newer Northern Helderberg sites. The growing season started early and the timing of the rain, and of picking, was critical. The result is a Cabernet with fine, precise tannins, balance and beautiful fruit composure.

Banele Vakele of Tembela Wines is among the most exciting Young Guns to come out of SA. Just named the best overall winner in the Winemag Next Generation Awards 2026, his Chenin and Syrah are on track to become some of the country’s finest examples.

Banele’s 2025 Syrah hails from the Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch – one of South Africa’s most distinctive terroirs, especially for New World Syrah. This is a seductive wine with tapenade, dark fruit perfume and ‘impeccably managed tannins’ (Winemag). Limited quantities are available, so tuck in while you can.🌟

Made for serious Chenin aficionados, the Tembela Chenin Blanc 2025 is exceptionally fine, fragrant and layered, filling the senses with orange blossom, stone fruit and grapefruit zest. Banele seeks out the best old-vine fruit from Stellenbosch and Darling, producing an age-worthy Chenin with concentration and energy. It will go the distance but is also absolutely delicious right now.

Having been Duncan Savage’s right-hand man for 7 years, Banele has shown incredible growth with every release. Now standing alone, this independent winemaker is ‘a name to watch’ (Tim Atkin MW).

*Winemag Next Generation Awards 2026 is a competition that aims to identify and showcase South Africa’s best young winemaking talent.

A red next to a roaring fire is great, but have you experienced the joy of a cracking Champagne alongside samp and mushroom risotto, Cape Malay curry, a comforting chicken stew, or warm toast and butter?

Michel Genet’s Blanc de Blancs Spirit Grand Cru is the floral, pretty, creamy, rich but focused Champagne of dreams, for only R795. From the Côte des Blancs in Champagne, this 100% Chardonnay offers breadth and minerality with fine bubbles and a velvety finish.✨

The beauty of serving Champagne slightly warmer in winter (10–12°C) is that it unlocks deep aromatics and pairs perfectly with hearty dishes, as its bright acidity effortlessly cuts through rich foods. And there’s no struggle to keep the wines cool enough.

From a Champagne-producing family whose vinous history dates back more than a century, Michel Genet founded the business in 1965. His children now manage their 9-hectare, organically farmed estate, of which 7.6 hectares are planted with Chardonnay spread over 37 parcels! They harvest by hand and vinify each parcel separately to produce Champagnes of the highest quality.

Glenelly Lady May is the pinnacle of Stellenbosch Bordeaux-style blends. Their best-rated release yet, the 2021 is a wine of grace, finesse and persistent power, combining ‘succulence with structure at the highest level’ (Christian Eedes).

‘The wine is monumental in scale yet defined by clarity rather than weight,’ says Eedes. The 2021 is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It offers cassis, plums, pressed violets and pencil shavings supported by firm, cascading tannins – promising phenomenal ageing.🌟

Glenelly was acquired in 2003 by Madame May de Lencquesaing of Bordeaux’s Château Pichon Lalande. Her vision was to transform the property into one of the finest in Stellenbosch, and Glenelly has certainly repaid this faith.

If you’re in Cape Town, join us tonight at Tannin wine bar in Bree Street for a Glenelly Lady May Vertical with cellarmaster Dirk van Zyl. He’ll take us through a series of vintages, alongside top Bordeaux, to showcase the evolution of this modern icon. Email [email protected] to buy a ticket and secure your spot.

The magical Skurfberg mountain produces some of the rarest and most unique Chenins in the country. This is one of them.✨

For more than a decade, Botanica’s Mary Delany Chenin has consistently been rated 95+ by Platter’s, Winemag and Tim Atkin MW, with the 99-point 2024 crowned Chenin Blanc of the Year in the Platter’s Guide.

We like to think of this as the perfect autumn wine, offering generous fruit, savoury complexity and plenty of texture on the finish. From vines planted in 1957, the powerful 2024 is full of personality and will really shine after three years (and beyond) in your cellar.

Minuscule quantities are produced and only a few cases are available, so secure it while you can.

Have you ever tried a wine made from ungrafted, prephylloxera vines that are over 140 years old? Enter the Terre Nere Etna Rosso Prephylloxera Don Peppino 2023 from Mount Etna in Sicily, Europe’s largest active volcano. This wine is in a league of its own.

The 2023 is ‘intensely layered, more lifted and graceful than expected’ and ‘impossibly long’, says Vinous. Terre Nere have pioneered fine wine production since 2002, and their 2023s are some of the ‘most exotic, finessed and elegant wines’ they’ve ever produced, notes Eric Guido, who was ‘left in awe’.🌟

Year on year, Terre Nere’s introductory red, Etna Rosso, is one of our best-sellers and offers so much for its price point. From low-yielding vines, the 2023 shows wild, crunchy red fruit, lavender, clove and sage, with crushed rock minerality, lively acidity and fine, coating tannins that continuously entice the palate.
