Fishing Report 14 October 2022
Weather for the Week.
It will be a bit windy today and tomorrow but Sunday morning there will be a good window for fishing.
Lagoon
Summer fish are back and some very nice size river snapper have been caught, the biggest I know of has been 5.3kg with several over the 3kg, some decent size pickhandles have also been caught in the estuary the juveniles rarely get of 2.5kg soon the big diamonds will be coming into the lagoon and are best caught floating a bait over a sand bank on the incoming tide, don’t let the shallow water put you off, park in the channel and use a whole prawn of dead mullet.
Surf
Talk of the town has got to be the Labotus (tripletail) caught on Wednesday evening of 63cm or 4.2kg on the scale. Other fish biting at the moment are spinner sharks, snapper cob , squaretail kob and so far over the last 3 weeks 6 diamonds have been land with 1 caught during the common venue competition last weekend although we have a lot of north wind the diamonds are not here yet in great numbers. Port Dunford is fishing very well at the moment and has been for the last 10 days or so, this I know because the amount of bait the small scale fisherman are buying. I have no boxes of sardines left till next Wednesday. Tuesday and Wednesday night produced a lot of kob even as far up the beach from Port Dunford to the light house.

Ski boat
We have monthly mug on Sunday from first light till 2pm, the wind is expected to pick up late morning. Last weekend 2 boats went out and Toffies small boy caught a nice morph grunter nearly as big as him. Sounds like Sunday will be good for high point.

Fishing Report 12 August 2022
Weather for the Week.
Today and tomorrow are good fishing days but on Sunday and midday we have a big south coming through.
Lagoon
Fishing the stone wall with drop shot an angler caught 7 garfish or yellow fin needle fish plus some other species like river bream, for some reason the river snapper ore being shy.
The little pelican that is living near the slipway was entangled with fishing line and had a hook stuck in its throat. Ross was given permission to catch it with a cast net by Ezemvelo. Ross netted it and it was gently handled on the slipway and the line was cut off as close the hook as possible while this was taking place the bird regurgitated fish that is in its tummy and it had a mullet and another small fish in its pouch it also had a whole lot of sardines so people must be feeding it as I told Trueman he does not by from me. This is making the bird depended on people and it is becoming a pest, it took bait out of a little boys hand. We are looking to relocate it far from people. Please stop feeding it.

Surf
2 strange specie of shark were caught recently by Jan Sambriel, Short Fin Mako and a Hammer head of 1.5m only seen a photo of the mako taken on a very old camera. A bus of a shad 77cm was landed that is 6kg so the big ones are still here. The flat fish seem to be very quiet as this time of year we get brown skates and duckbills but this year they seem to be sleeping. Gerhard got an eel catfish or ell barbell and a smooth hound shark at red boom, who says fishing is boring in Mtunzini.
Ski boat
A few boats have been going out during the weekend and report that not much game fish about but plenty of Whales, bottom fishing comprises mainly of kob however rockcod and slinger are been caught so are the odd soldier., tomorrow they are going to try for some Garrick at the backline of the surf at the river mouth. Saturday looks a good day for fishing and the club has an outing together with the rock and surf section and they are targeting Garrick, sounds like a fun day.

Fishing Report 22 July 2022
Weather for the Week.
Today and Saturday are going to be good fishing days but Sunday to Tuesday will be chilly then it warms up again.
Lagoon
Last weekend some guys came fishing and caught 11 species of fish so I asked them what kind they were “we don’t know we could tell a new one by it been different from the others” was the reply, first guess would be defiantly grunter stumpies and river bream in the mix. That pelican is still hanging around the lagoon area and is even following boats, chase it away as it already has a hook in it and is trying to take fish off the line when you land it.
Surf
Early morning sessions are still producing spinner sharks, they are now getting near the 3kg and are fun to catch on a light rig. The evenings seem to be better for edibles especially the first hour after dark if fishing for cob. I got some sards in stock from the sardine run that are frozen in brine, I am interested to see how the brine makes a difference.

Ski boat
We had another comp of the weekend, thinking Sunday was going to be a blow out we moved it to Saturday and the swells where huge the guys could not get out of the mouth the 3 boats that went off the beach got out but we had to wait and be patient. Kiru took 2 guys out for the first time and they all entered the comp and skipper and 2 crew were in the prizes with tuna, Janie won the comp with a cob closest to the bench mark and he was the only Jet Ski that got out the river mouth. Tomorrow some boats are launching off the beach, let’s hope they on the fish. A Jet Ski is going to the wreck to look for snoek as it is time for them.

Fishing Report 13 July 2022
Weather for the Week.
Actually the weather is quiet good at the moment for all fascist of fishing, not as hot as last weekend but fine otherwise.
Lagoon
On Sunday a spotted grunter was reportedly caught in the main beach car park of 5kg, this is a best of a fish. We suspect it got so far upriver due to the successful gill netting operations conducted by Ezemvelo over the weekend. Fishing continues to be busy with a variety of species been caught including a brown stingray which of light tackle gives the angler a hard time, it seems that because the water is cold they have come closer inshore and into the lagoon.

Surf
Sunday before last an estimated 150kg raggie was caught in the surf near the river mouth, this was not the targeted species as it was caught on a nylon trace and foul hooked itself, I suspect Lisle was fishing for Garrick and the shark came to inspect the bait never the less it was a fine catch indeed. I saw a angler on the beach struggling with a brown stingray and before I could stop and jump of the tractor to assist he put his fingers in the spiracles and through it into the sea, please do not do that as you will end up killing the animal, put your fingers in its mouth and gently pull it into the sea without lifting it completely up or even worse turning it completely over. At the moment the morning session is producing lots of baby spinner sharks and the afternoon going into the evening is producing less sharks but more shad, kob and pompanos.
Ski boat
On Saturday 16 July the ski boat club is hosting a competition starting a first light we suspect the weigh in will close at 4pm so prize giving can be held before the rugby starts. Entry fee will be R50.00 per angler and they are looking at a food option. The bench mark system is going to be used and is proving to be very popular way of hosting these small competitions.
This weekends benchmark
Cuta 23kg
Snoek 10kg
Yellow fin tuna 18kg
Garrick 16kg
Grunter 7kg
Slinger 3.5kg
Soldier 5kg
Rockod 8kg
Salmon 15kg
Rubber lip 7kg
Finatic went out yesterday and by the looks of the fish they got the whole crew would have got a prize.

Fishing Report 30 June 2022
Weather for the Week.
Not bad weather a head, might be a bit windy on Saturday but the days are hot.
Lagoon
I quote “The lagoon is alive and the fish are biting.” Lots of little fish are getting bigger and getting ready to move out to sea, most of the stumpies and some grunter spend a lot of their life time in the surf zone and by the amount of stumpies been caught in the river I am surprized they are not been caught in big numbers on our beach.
Surf
We coming to the time of the year when turtles wash up onto the beach this is what you must do to ensure they survive.
Phone myself 0825252923 or Ushaka Marine World 0313288222 or 031328060a/h .
Do not under any circumstances pick up the turtle and put it back into the water, the reason it is on the beach is because it is ill and does not want to go into the sea as it has no energy to fight the waves.
When you phone to report the stranding the operator will ask you some questions and guide you to what you must do next, if you have kids with you let them look at the turtle but not too close to it and they must not touch it.
The most common reason for stranding it they develop an air bubble in the carapace and cannot dive to get food so they get so week they wash out therefore it is imperative for them to get to Ushaka as soon as possible ( Ezemvelo will transport the animal).
Most of the kob been caught are barely making size however Jan Sambriel got one of 89cm. Most of the catches are comprising of shad, spotted pompano and baby sharks, they seem early this year. I have not heard of any Garrick been caught yet but I think on Sunday that will change.

Ski boat
The next monthly mug will be announced on the Monday before the weekend of the event, tides and weather will be looked at first. The bench mark list will also change as we going into winter fishing season. This week we have had a few boats out and so far no Couta have been caught however 2 massive amberjacks were caught. Earlier in the week Kuru got 4 tuna so some game fish are still about. Conditions look good for Sunday. Just as I was writing the report Rod Bender asked for an early collection and they boated 2 Couta and 5 Tuna the second boat that launched today caught bottoms mainly cob , zebra and a slinger but they stopped fishing early as the cob were going mad.

Fishing Report 17 June 2022
Weather for the Week.
Weather conditions for Friday and Saturday are good however the wind comes up midday on Saturday.
Lagoon
The river is clearing up and the fish are coming back on the bite but you must look for the fish due to the drop in temperature they tend to stay deep. At the main car park to the right is logs in the water, fish along that section and don’t cast far as the channel runs along the side of the river, other good spots are the steel bridge, last corner before the N2 Bridge and under both bridges. He most common fish species been caught now is the river bream and small grunters.

Surf
The sea is settling and clearing up a bit after Wednesday’s wind with little rain. Main species caught over the past week are shad, long fin pompano, spinner sharks , lessor giant guitar fish, lessor sand sharks, small cob ( big ones must be about and snapper kob but know Garrick although they have been seen in the surf and river mouth. Boyens and Port Dunford have also seen a fair share of cob been caught some as big as 8kg.
Ski boat
Sunday’s comp was a great success with lots of specie weighed in although the bench mark weight was not beaten the closed fish to the bench mark was a couta caught by Keeve at 72%. Species caught were rockcod, morph grunter, cob, snapper cob, slinger and the one couta. 10 boats launched of the beach while the remaining boats went out of the river. The Siyaya River has steep banks and you have to cross it in the sea so watching for a gap is almost like launching except now you in a bakkie.

Fishing Report 9 June 2022
Weather for the Week.
For a change after the rain stops tomorrow morning we have a good weekend coming up weather wise and it is going to be hot.
Lagoon
The sea water is starting to clear up after the heavy seas that started Monday 2 weeks 10 days ago which means the river water will start to clean up as dirty water was been washed into the river by the sea for a change. It seems as though the river snapper have moved inland as most of the catches are been made along the section from the steel bridge going west and then in the area before and after the 2 bridges let us say from the river estate till after the Empangeni old road bridge. Kob have come into the river now although they are undersize the big ones should follow. The stumpies are getting bigger and we have reports of a few been caught around the 500g mark. Remember the river bream will be full of roe so please handle them with care, this species is under pressure and relies on the river system to survive.
Surf
At last the sea is settling down and the guys are able to fish, the main catches on main beach are shad and pompano. The guys have started fishing for Garrick as they are been caught in Richards Bay so they are coming past here, the best spots are at the river mouth and in the mouth itself and again at Boyens on the north bank of the Amatikulu River. Best bait to use is mullet and shad and the best indication they are here is when you can’t find mullet of shad. Guys fishing the main or doggy beach there is no harm in sliding a shad into the first gully. Garrick are almost exclusively shore zone feeders and look for the small fish feeding under the shore break.

Ski boat
At last Sunday sees the first monthly mug comp for many a year so far 13 boats have entered at r50.00 per angler and for the anglers and immediate family will entitle you at R60.00 per person to enjoy supper which a spit roasted sheep, plus the first 10 boats to register and pay got 20l of fuel for free. To make the comp a fair one the bench mark system will be used and the species chosen will be announced at the briefing on Saturday evening at 5pm. The bench mark system is a fair one as everybody stands the same chance to win. I think the river boats should get together and plan a comp for themselves on the same day from next month onwards.

Fishing Report 20 May 2022
Weather for the Weekend.
Big rain forecast tomorrow but not nearly as much as the south coast, from Sunday it starts clearing up with good weather all week.
Lagoon
Fritz while on holiday from the UK caught himself a fish which turned out to be a River bream.
Surf
Now that we have spring tide out of the way fishing should get back to normal, I heard reports of side wash and w**d making fishing difficult. It seems as though this time of the year is edible time with catches of kob being on the increase and it is time for Garrick/leervis , the guys are starting to fish for them and the best spot is in the area of the river mouth and in the mouth itself as the channel is deep, if you do not have a boat you can park at Port Dunford and walk there stopping to get mullet on the way. Diamonds like mullet and quiet often the winter diamonds are much bigger than summer ones. Just chatted to Je, last night he got a 2kg shad and a snapper then as it went dark the fish went off the bite, almost like they were load shedding.

Ski boat
Kiru and Finatic seem to be on the fish when they go out, Sarel caught a 5.1kg River Snapper in the area of high point while fishing for Couta and he said the rig was not deep, Finatic landed a geelbeck which according to normal catching times it is early for them, besides couta been caught so are amberjacks which make very good eating at I am not a great fish eater this has got to be one of the finest fish I have ever eaten. Next week the sea will settle and they will probably go out again.

Fishing Report 12 May 2022
Weather for the Week.
Weather today and tomorrow looks good however Sunday morning has some rain but clears up during the morning.
Lagoon
The water has cleaned up nicely and the fish are happy, we coming into spring and the low tide is very low as the mouth is deep which means it fills up nicely and fishing near the mouth on and around the sandbanks will produce decent fish on the incoming tide. River bream are feeding well, I suppose it is because they fattening themselves for breeding season as they are winter breeders, river snapper are still in the river and feeding well. Small flat fish have arrived for winter and the baby grunter and stumpies will keep you busy.
Surf
Surf fishing for edibles is good especially as there is a chance of a decent kob coming out, there are a lot of small ones so even if it is 58cm put it back you will get a 60plus and you may only have one. I have heard of people cutting heads of kob please remember fish may only be transported with its head on. Now here is where things get tricky and a real scenario, you catch a 40cm Shad and decide to use it for bait so you cut the head off and catch a shark and during the fight the head gets destroyed, you then take some fillet and catch a kob so you put the cut up or left over shad in your cool box and set off home a week later you go fishing and get stopped by a law enforcement agent now what? You have a fish without a head so technically you are in the wrong, let’s hope common sense prevails as thy have seen you used it as bait and you can go on your merry way. Shad and potted pompano will keep you busy as well as the big puffies, very few lessors and baby sharks are been caught.

Ski boat
Fishing in the area of the wreck last weekend the 2 boats that I know of got some nice kingfish, however boats at High Point did not have a good time and one boats got 3 fish a small YFT and 2 Sada sada. Some bottoms came out at the wreck. Yesterday a visiting boat from Port Shepstone went in and out the mouth primary for Couta, they got none they started bottoms which was very slow going and they boated a few slinger and no kob. Two boats launched this morning and as of now they seem not to have fish.

Fishing Report 4 May 2022
Weather for the Week.
Today and tomorrow are great fishing days but Sunday the weather might turn.

Lagoon
Ryan while fishing away had a oxeye tarpon unexpectedly land in his boat and shortly there after hooked a river snapper, could it have been that fish that caused the oxeye to jump. His tally ended up with the addition of river bream and a malabar rockcod. Near the slipway a angler got 4 bay honey comb rays , they give a great fight on light tackle, please don’t turn them over when you are taking the hook out, you can kill them. The temperature in the river was 21 deg over the weekend which in itself is unusual as the river is normally warmer than the sea.
Surf
Cob are starting to come on the bite but are all undersize please be mindful that a cob of 58cm is undersize and must go back, I am led to believe that bigger ones are coming up at Dogandweni. Lots of size shad and decent size spotted pompao are been caught and unfortunately so are those big puffies we get in this area. Anita caught a massive silago and at first when she reeled it in nobody was sure what she got till closer inspection.

Ski boat
After 2 years of no competitions the Couta Classic finally got underway, 32 boats and 102 Anglers. Saturday was a blow out however we managed to get the boats out on Sunday, apparently out deep the swells were quiet big but that did not stop the guys from catching fish, not many were boated but it leave Anton in the lead with one day to go. Monday early the wash was very strong at Garlands and some of the boats turned back to try the mouth, launching there was also not smooth sailing however 2 boats went off Garlands with Willie waiting nearly a hour before he set off and I would say his launch was the best by a small boat in the tournament, Christo gave him a line and he followed it to the cm. Monday saw the boats coming in early as cut off was 2pm, Frans Botha kept his a game almost to the last minute and boated the biggest fish. Well done to the top 3 and all the participants and the organizing committee
1st Frans Botha 30.14kg
2nd Nick De Wit 23.61kg
3rd Anton Breytenbach 23.12kg
