The story of a scent.
Last year, Lilja and I visited a magical Hotel and Garden. The brief from interior designer misi overturf creative was clear: capture the spirit of the place in all its facets. She was bringing Zomerlust Boutique Hotel to life, giving it the colours, textures and honour it deserves.
Follow along the slides to experience what inspired this scent.
I was drawn to the garden, especially the Magnolia tree on the central axis. The old tree had a few flowers, but at least 8 meters off the ground. I desperately wanted to try and extract them!
So misi overturf creative phoned her Charlie and this gentle tree surgeon promptly climbed the tree and extracted a few blooms.
I made copious notes of what I was experiencing, what scent clues came my way and which scents will tell the story of the Hotel in all of its nuances.
The incredible spaces and fittings provided the backdrop of where this scent should fit in. I especially LOVED the garden room.
And the beautiful stoep that overlooked the garden space.
But mostly, I was inspired by the mountains present in all the views and the anchor of the Hotel's foundation. I really wanted to pull through their scent to bring our natural landscape home.
I drew inspiration from all of the various trees and vegetation.
And brought the perceptual scent landscape back to my workshop. I worked on a tincture to pull through the central bee theme and worked on 6 different scent combinations.
After sharing my five favourites with the client Skoert Elizabeth, Wikus and Wayne plus the design team at misi overturf creative, we selected two final scents.
These were combined to create the scent for Zomerlust Boutique Hotel
A beautiful combination of florals (yellow) and fynbos (blue)
That (miraculously) fits in perfectly with the colour scheme of misi overturf creative
Old meets new
I was then asked to create and manufacture a bespoke collection of branded bottles for the Hotel's range of amenities.
Look out for our next post to see the result!
