This little South African Flavoured engine was brought in for some repairs and modifications.

The original builder said inspiration was taken from the Natal Government Railway N class of 1906 designed by D.A Hendrie for the Weenen Narrow Gauge Line.

Some of the modifications and repairs

-Missing back bissel replaced
-Missing dome replaced
-Sand Dome added
-Coal box added
-Front buffer beam expanded
- Lanterns added
-Short Chimney swapped for a taller one.
- More suitable ramsbottom safety valve added.
- vinyl smoke box door stickers replaced with 3D printed hinges and smokebox dart

Concept art for conversion of a G scale Bachmann big hauler to a 1:24th scale Cape Government Railway 6A locomotive.
I use the original drawings and overlay them with the big hauler then modify components so that the body fits the chassis but still looks right.

This then helps me put together a 3D model for 3D printing.

The Original Wynberg Tank of 1864.

If one looks at Frank Hollands book on the history of South African Locomotives you will find dimension drawings for all of the listed classes except THIS one.

This locomotive was brought in by the privately owned Wynberg Railway Company in Cape Town 1864. It must have been fairly successful as the Cape Government Railway ordered 2 more from Robert Stephenson and Co after it took over administration of the railway.

Unfortunately they didnt last long as the gauge conversion in South Africa cut these broad gauge engines working lives short. Their boilers were used to power workshop equipment but the rest of their parts were broken apart and scrapped.

Below is an artists impression of the front elevation of the locomotive with the 2 photographs found in frank Hollands book as you can see the quality is not amazing but it can be forgiven considering that photography itself was a fairly new concept in 1860. :D
