SSK proudly partners with Touch Your Dream, a powerful new anti-drug youth movement in Humansdorp, bringing hope to families across Kouga and the Sarah Baartman District.

Touch Your Dream, founded in December 2025 by community leader Carvin Jaars, responds directly to the growing substance abuse crisis affecting young people, households, schools and local businesses. With over 25 years of youth development experience, Jaars has witnessed firsthand the increasing distress calls from families, rising youth cases linked to the National Prosecuting Authority and employees battling addiction.

Today, this 16-member team, supported by partners including the Oyster Bay Healing Clinic, is actively working to restore hope. Their approach is not about condemnation, but about awakening purpose, helping individuals rediscover dreams, rebuild goals and choose healthier paths.

Through parents’ WhatsApp support groups, recovery programmes like Celebrate Recovery, school holiday activities, rehabilitation referrals, awareness campaigns and therapeutic restoration initiatives, Touch Your Dream is creating practical support on the ground.

The work is made possible through co-investments of SSK, Kouga Municipality and the Social Employment Fund, whose support enables community-driven solutions to thrive.

Together, we are not only confronting addiction, but we are also rebuilding futures and strengthening our communities.

Humansdorpse Landbou Korporasie The Co-op / Die Koöperasie part of the SSK group , is deeply encouraged by the opportunity to co-steward a strategically located, fertile and water-abundant area of land in the Kouga region.

This initiative combines local knowledge with practical data. Elders from the Kruisfontein and Die Berg communities recall a time when the land was highly productive, especially for sweet potatoes that were sold to regional markets by rail. These stories point to real, untapped assets: fertile land, farming experience and capable communities ready to be revived.

Through a partnership with the IDC’s Social Employment Fund, over 40 young people are gaining accredited, hands-on training in sustainable land management, including tree felling, herbicide use, fire prevention and firefighting. These are valuable skills that lead to jobs, small businesses, and income opportunities. As these skills grow, new micro-enterprises are expected to support farming, land restoration, and environmental services in the region. This creates a positive cycle where skills lead to businesses, businesses create income, and income builds long-term community wealth.

Overall, the program shows how investing in people and land can turn existing potential into lasting social, environmental and economic benefits for the community.

The Co-op / Die Koöperasie recently sent Mr. Lunga Mlangeni to Rehoboth: Foundations for Farming Stewardship Centre training and this explains his experience:

“I recently completed a Five-day Foundations for Farming training in Mpumalanga at the Rehoboth training centre, and it was a highly enriching and motivating experience. The programme was comprehensive and practical, covering Agronomy and Horticulture in depth, with particularly strong focus on soil fertility and pest control, where the training went far beyond introductory concepts.

Throughout the week, we explored a wide range of crops, as well as herbs and medicinal plants, which broadened my understanding of diversified and sustainable farming systems. The practical application of principles was consistently emphasised, making the learning both relevant and actionable.

A special highlight of the training was the devotional and worship sessions, which added a meaningful and holistic dimension to the programme. One of the teachings, Foundations for the Family, stood out and is something I am seriously considering implementing in the future, both personally and within training environments.
I am proud to confirm that I am now an International Champion Trainer for Foundations for Farming. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and feel greatly encouraged and equipped to implement and share the knowledge gained to support productive, sustainable, and values-driven farming practices.”

Urgent Update on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Situation in Humansdorp

By: Hattingh Bornman
Executive Mayor of Kouga Municipality
Date: 3 February 2026
Release: Immediate

Kouga Municipality wishes to provide an urgent update following today’s stakeholder meeting regarding the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) situation in the Humansdorp area.

The meeting included local farmers, Kouga Municipal officials, representatives from Bhisho, Kouga Wind Farm, the State Veterinarian, Agri Eastern Cape, and the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO), among other key stakeholders.

Cattle in the Humansdorp area were tested on Saturday, 31 January, with approximately 40 cattle initially affected. Official laboratory results are expected by Friday, 6 February. However, based on strong clinical indications and confirmation by the veterinarian on site, all signs at this stage point to the presence of Foot-and-Mouth Disease.

The affected cattle have been isolated together with approximately 100 additional cattle, meaning that more than 100 cattle may already be impacted. The situation poses an immediate and serious threat to the broader livestock sector in Kouga and the wider region.

Given the gravity of the situation, six urgent priorities have been identified and will be acted upon without delay:

1) Securing Feed Supply for affected and isolated animals, with quantities and distribution arrangements to be confirmed at tomorrow’s meeting (4 February).

2) Immediate surveillance of communal farms to determine whether any spread of FMD has occurred.

3) Strict control of roaming animals, with law enforcement engaging communal farmers and monitoring hotspot areas.

4) Inspection of fencing bordering high-risk farms, including internal Kouga inspections and assessments linked to wind farm line areas.

5) Drafting of a combined letter of motivation to national government, compiled from all stakeholders into one formal submission.

6) Urgent establishment of sanitation and biosecurity points, with farmers implementing controls at farm entrances and Kouga doing so at strategic municipal locations.

Implementation of these priorities, together with any additional actionable measures, will be followed up at tomorrow’s meeting.

Kouga Municipality fully recognizes the grave and immediate risk this outbreak poses — not only to animal health, but also to the agricultural economy, food security, and livelihoods across Kouga and the wider region.

The municipality will do everything within its mandate, together with provincial and national partners, to contain and mitigate this threat swiftly and decisively. This will require full cooperation, strict adherence to control measures, and a united effort from every stakeholder involved.

Kouga remains committed to acting decisively in the interests of all residents and stakeholders during this critical period
