Harvesting honey is a delicate balance of care, timing, and respect for the hive.

That’s why beekeeping suits are so important, they protect beekeepers from stings while allowing calm, controlled work around the hive. When we feel safe, the bees stay calmer too, making the process gentler for everyone involved.

It’s not just protection, it’s part of working in harmony with nature.

A fascinating fact about the Cape honey bee is that it’s one of the only honey bee subspecies in the world where worker bees can reproduce without mating🐝

The Cape honey bee has a rare ability called thelytokous parthenogenesis, which means a worker bee can lay eggs that develop into female bees without needing a queen or mating.

Even more interesting, Cape workers can sometimes infiltrate other colonies and begin laying eggs there, a behaviour known as “social parasitism.” This makes them both incredibly unique and, in some cases, a challenge for other bee populations.

It’s one of the reasons the Cape bee is so special, and so closely studied in South Africa’s beekeeping world.

A gentle touch matters. During honey harvesting, we use soft brushes to carefully guide bees from the frames, helping minimise stress and disturbance to the colony. Beekeeping is not only about the honey we harvest, it’s about working with care and respect for the bees who make it all possible.

Winter brings a different pace to beekeeping. As the bees slow down, so do we. The colder months mean fewer hive inspections, minimal disturbance, and a greater focus on supporting colony health and ensuring enough honey stores remain.

Winter reminds us that beekeeping is not only about harvesting, it’s about caring for the hive through every season.

Did you know?
The Cape honey bee is one of nature’s most fascinating pollinators, found right here in the Western and Southern Cape. Specially adapted to our beautiful fynbos landscape, these remarkable bees play a vital role in pollination and supporting biodiversity. Small yet extraordinary, they are a treasured part of our natural heritage.

Bee smokers play an important role in our honey harvesting process, helping us work gently and respectfully with the hive. At Simply Bee, we use only a small amount of cool smoke, just enough to calm the bees and encourage a peaceful environment while we work.

The smoke helps signal to the bees that it’s time to stay calm and focus on the hive, rather than becoming defensive. It also briefly masks alarm pheromones, allowing us to open the hive and remove frames with minimal disruption.

We are very mindful not to overuse smoke. Too much can stress the colony, so our approach is always gentle and controlled, prioritising the wellbeing of the bees at every step. This careful balance allows us to harvest honey sustainably while keeping the hive healthy, calm, and thriving.

Where can you set up a beehive? Bees can’t be placed just anywhere, they need the right environment to thrive.

Best conditions:
• Plenty of flowers & forage within 2–3 km
• Morning sun + afternoon shade
• Shelter from strong wind
• A clean water source nearby
• Dry, well-drained ground

Avoid:
• Busy walkways & entrances
• Close proximity to neighbours
• Damp, flooded areas
• Places with frequent pesticide use

Good placement = happy bees, safe people, and strong honey production

Protecting your hive means protecting your bees.

Meet the three vital members of the hive.

Queen Bee
The heart of the colony. One fertile female per hive who can lay around 2,000 eggs a day and live for up to 2–3 years.

Worker Bees
The powerhouse of the hive. These sterile females do everything from foraging and cleaning to caring for the colony. A hive can have 20,000–80,000 workers during peak season!

Drones
The male bees of the hive, whose primary role is to mate with a queen. There can be up to 1,000 drones in a hive at a time.

Every bee has a purpose, and together they create the incredible harmony of the hive.
