Hierdie nuwe boek van Gerjo Ben dra heel gepas die titel Asem. Jy moet tyd maak om asem te haal wanneer die lewe jou vasdruk, omklap, of jou asem wegslaan, want sonder asem is jy in groot moeilikheid.

Dit laat my d**k aan Job wat vir die Here gesê het: “Wil U nie ʼn oomblik van my af wegkyk en my ʼn oomblikkie laat asem skep nie.” (Job 7:19) Daar staan letterlik: “... dat ek net my spoeg kan afsluk.”

Hierdie praktiese boek wil jou help om in God se teenwoordigheid jou spoeg af te sluk, jou asem terug te kry, en ʼn vars perspektief uit God se hand op die lewe te kry.

Ek kan hierdie boek aanbeveel, want ek ken die skrywer al baie jare. Sy boek is soos hy – eerlik, eg en vol genade. Dit is soos hemelse salf op die lewe se seer. Wie van ons het nie daardie salf nodig nie?

Toe Robert Louis Stevenson naby aan die einde van sy lewe was, het sy vrou by sy bed kom staan en gesê: “I suppose in spite of all your troubles you will tell me again that it is a beautiful day.” Die beroemde skrywer het geantwoord: “Yes, my dear. I refuse to let that row of medicine bottles be the circumference of my horizon.”

Met Asem wil Gerjo Ben jou juis hiermee help.

Augustinus het geglo dat hoop die grootste van die drie deugde is.

Geloof sê vir ons: God bestaan.
Liefde sê vir ons: God is goed.
Maar hoop sê vir ons: God doen wat Hy belowe het.

Dit is hoop wat niemand van jou kan wegneem nie. Hoekom? Want hoop is geanker in die Ewige. Maar meer nog: Hoop is ʼn Persoon. Paulus noem Christus Jesus ons Hoop (1 Timoteus 1:1).

Dít is waaraan Asem jou wil laat vashou. Deur hierdie boek laat Gerjo Ben ons iets beleef van hemelse mond-tot-mond asemhaling, want God blaas Sy lewe in ons. Sy asem maak ons sterk. Dankie, Gerjo Ben, vir hierdie tydige boek.

One of my highlights recently was visiting McNaughton’s Bookshop in Graaff-Reinet South Africa. A true Karoo gem ❤️

Located on the main street, and nestled between the architecture award-winning Dutch Reformed Church and the newly opened Fossil Museum, this little bookshop sits at the heart of a town rich in history and storytelling.

This independent, family-owned bookshop has been part of the community since 2007, and it shows in the way it’s grown into a rich, thoughtfully curated space. The shelves are filled with an incredible range from contemporary fiction and South African literature to biography, history, cookery, travel writing, children’s books, poetry, memoir, and educational texts for local schools.

There’s also a wonderful mix of second-hand and antiquarian books, each with its own story to tell.

What struck me most is how deeply rooted the bookshop is in its community.

It’s not just a place to buy books, it’s a place of discovery, conversation, and connection.

Whether you walk in looking for something specific or simply to browse, you’re almost guaranteed to leave with something unexpected.

I couldn’t resist and walked out with two books 📚
