Oh how I wish we could do this

How do you turn a slab of urban pavement into a thriving, multi-layered woodland canopy in just 365 days?

The secret lies in a Japanese botanical technique designed to mimic how wild forests naturally regenerate: the Miyawaki method.

Instead of spacing trees far apart, a diverse mix of native species is planted extremely densely—often three to four saplings per square meter—into deeply restored soil.

When planted so closely, the young trees form shared underground fungal networks, trading nutrients while engaging in a friendly race toward the sun.

The stats behind this approach are staggering. Miyawaki mini-forests grow up to 10 times faster and up to 30 times denser than conventional tree plantations.

Research shows these dense pockets can attract up to 100 times more biodiversity, creating instant havens for urban wildlife while absorbing heavy rainfall and cooling the surrounding pavement.

The before-and-after image right here at Southbank tells the whole story.

In just twelve months, a cold, paved corner transformed into a lush, vibrant micro-canopy bursting with life.

It is a powerful reminder that our cities don't have to stay concrete jungles. When we step aside and let nature's own cooperative systems take over, wild spaces can return with breathtaking speed.

This is the method I follow to repot a tired pot plant that has compacted roots. We should ideally replant our pots once a year! Let me know if you have any questions
